Hello, I have some questions as a new user or beginner.
Is it possible to select and edit more than one channel in tracks view at the same time? For instance for give 8 tracks the same color or the same output?
Is it possible to select and edit several Chanels in the Mixer view?
In the “Finder” structure of VST Live 2 (on Mac) I can see several folders like “layers, parts, stacks, songs” and so on. There is a folder called “audio” too. What is it for? I see “audio” folders for my imported audio files in every song folder too.
Okay, that’s all for now. Thank you very much for your help.
assets like media files (audio, video etc) and Layers, Stacks etc are stored along in the project folder, in each of their according folders. You can set the project folder path in preferences, and also when you open the Media Bay to the right, you can access some of those (drag/drop) and set if those assets should be stored locally (global only to the computer you are working on), or with the project.
To store the actual state of the current project to a new folder, use “Save Archive”.
Ok, thank you very much for your help. Point 1 and 2 would really help to speed up my workflow. Imagine I import stem files or songs with 30 and more audio tracks. So it really takes a long time to color them all and route them to the correct outputs. Here it would help I could select all channels for e.g. “Synth Pads” or "Arpeggios"simultaneously to choose the same audio out for all of them.
So ctrl + click to select multiple items and then assign a common setting.
(Wow 30 tracks!, I’m never over 8, but I submix). @musicullum I’d vote for it! A great idea I’d probably never use, but still a great idea.
Yes sometimes only 4, sometimes 30. Works fine. But the workflow of routing outputs/inputs or set color is “Sisyphus”. To select several Chanels in the Mixer view to edit the volume simultaneously would be great too.
So I really I have problems with the architecture. First of all: I have a project programed on a Mac mini with roundabout 35 song, more than 20 tracks each. Every song is stored in his own folder with his audio tracks and a video and some layers. Now I would like to transfer this project to my Macbook. I tried to open the project first. Worked, but the media files have been missed. Tried to transfer the project as an “Archiv” with the Audio folder of the project, where all audio files are stored too and so called “peak” Now the media files have been loaded, but: some of them have the same name. And so VST Live 2 loaded tracks of song 2 in song 6 or so, because the names of the files are identical. This gives an absolut Desaster. Why can´t a song not use the files, which are stored in the audio folder of the song? What’s the sense of the audio folder of the project? Or did I get wrong anywhere? Please help me to transfer my project from one computer to another. Thank you.
Well, isn´t it a normal workaround to call a track in a DAW for example “Synthbass” or “Arp” or something like that? I often do that. In my case the DAW is Studio One for years now and it was never important, which names I choose. The software will always find the correct files, because they are stored in the respectively song folder. And if the DAW does not find the file, I have a “Locate” function. Maybe this could be an idea for next updates.
There is something I can´t understand. I have a project on my local computer with some songs stored in separate folders with audio folders within, where I can find the correct files of each song. Very good structured and simple. I can open the project, every song works fine, no problem. Until I transfer the project as an Archiv to another Computer. With the same structures I have now a project audio folder, where all the files are stored too. Now my project has the double size on storage and when I open the project some songs have the wrong tracks loaded, because there are files like “synthbass” and “synth bass(2)” and “synth bass(3)” and so on. Just examples. Unfortunately now VST Live loads sometimes the wrong files in my songs and the result is an absolut chaos.
Telling u a personal story as an answer
I put together a big project a meny years ago. Bounced all stems, using the similar naming structure you mentioned. Saved the complete Reaper project to a pendrive, gave it to the tech guys, they clicked “search for files” and the complete mess has been born.
So I’ve learned the lesson….
From that time I use some 2-3char initials (at the beginning or the end of filename) to identify them in any case.
Hm, thank you for your advice. I´m sure I will follow that just as I always use the same color schemes. Means Not. Helps me not a little bit. Please VST Live 2Pro User, tell me for what are the separate song audio folders?
Just found another interesting thing. As I wrote, I try to get my project from one computer to another. For the transfer I use an external hard drive, a SSD. If I don’t remove the SSD from the Macbook, all my files will be loaded correctly!!! Under “Song Media Files…” the paths are now the original paths, where the files are imported from.
Thank you for your advice, but I did exacly that. But my project file does not use the audio folders of the songs, I have stored. And the audio files are there. And in the project audio folder too.
I ran into the same problem, and I ended up having to scrap the whole project-- it was too much of a mess to fix-- and approach it a different way, which cost me hours of work. I know the smartass answer is “don’t name your files the same names”, but here’s the thing:
I use Cubase, and Cubase doesn’t have this issue. I can create a song in Cubase, and name files “Bass”, “Kick Drum”, Rhythm Guitar", etc (and I betcha 90% of the world does the same thing), and then if I create another song, Cubase doesn’t have a problem if I use the same names because they’re DIFFERENT SONGS in DIFFERENT FOLDERS.
So when I export a bunch of songs from Cubase to VST Live, I expect it to work the same, as both programs are from the same company, and the behavior should be the same. I shouldn’t have to rename files before the export… but even so, there were no instructions or documentation that explained this. So I ended up with the wrong bass parts in the wrong songs, the wrong drum parts, etc.
And I still had this problem with the .peak files (see VST Live Import/Song Export Issue) when importing, which I still haven’t been able to solve. And VST Live did not recreate them, it just gave me the “Media Offline” message.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. Maybe there is a little chance, that Steinberg could fix this anyhow. Please Steinberg make, that an Archive has access to the audio folders in the SONGS and not in one big Audio folder. Or give us the possibility to SEARCH FOR FILES or changing the path of the song medias. Thank you.
Okay, this is conclusion for now: It´s not possible to use VST Live on stage for us. I just tried creating a new project where I simply load some existing “vlsong” into the project. VST Live then copies the tracks into the project’s audio folder every time, which makes no sense for me. This doubles the data, it contains errors and involves risks. Instead of just using the path of the respective song, which is already there. As long as it’s like this, the program won’t make it to the stage with us. That’s a shame since the program’s approaches are good.
while we all are waiting the ability for “re-link” files, assets, I have all my backing tracks and video tracks in a separated folder absolutely out of VL’s folders.
