VST Live and your DAW

In the first place this would have to be implemented by those magic Coding Fairies.

And even after they’re done coding: Do you really want to have like 5 or 10 markers for each and every song in your playlist? Are you sure you’d be able to handle them properly? Especially as you can already set prominent markers by creating Parts?

…As a dedicated Cubase user especially :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:, I would actually love to have this additional marker track feature — it would make navigation in VST Live much more detailed and flexible!:musical_keyboard:

Don’t worry, I promise not to create too many markers… only the absolutely necessary 37 per song :joy:

still back to what I wrote:
for live playing navigation: PARTs are for the same job.
You can dial any PART via MIDI#CC, also there is a new addition in v3.0.39, a new Action: “PLAY PART”

If you mean the one (Arranger track) used to recontruct songs, as sometimes need in a Cubase Project for different variations… no I don’t think that is purpose of any live performance system.

I don’t know the Arranger Track in Cubase and I don’t really care for such a feature, but for discussion: VST live is to „get your song on stage“ or for „live shows“ … I imagine a band where mostly one person cares about the software used and who is asked in rehersal … „can we jump to this“ … „can we repeat that“ … „can we try this order“ … I guess all things where you dont go to Cubase, change it, create new Parts, etc.

Thats doable with PARTs

Thats out of PART scope, but they can cut the clips if they need to solve it right in VL

Doable - yes, but convenient just to get a Marker somewhere in the middle of the song?

And as said … my question should only be a remainder, that there is a process between „studio“ and stage, that should (in a perfect world) be on the stage-software-side.

Interesting point.

I would suggest that pushing the argument to the nth degree brings you back to using a DAW: Can we replace x with y? Can we change the tempo?..

Where does one draw the line between development and performance?

And a very interesting/important discussion as well. :slightly_smiling_face:

There’s a sort of dividing line that needs to be defined: What should be prepared in your DAW and what should be possible in VST Live? And: Would you like to export projects from VST Live back to your DAW (without losing any edits)?

I have adapted my workflow at rehearsal. For songs that are under development I use Cubase. After arrangement and structure has finished or is in the final polishing, I switch to VSTL, that’s also true for practicing the show. Cubase is better, as long as you work on one song only. VSTL has it advantage, when you switch often between different songs or play a setlist. So for me the line is “working on one song” to “work with several songs”.

You can create an automation (or MIDI/action) track that jumps Parts - also with FlexLoops - as well.

That’s the $64,000 question and I think the developers have been struggling to define it for quite a while.

Maybe this discussion should be moved to a new topic as we are now drowning the original subject?

Good point

Done. :hugs:

What about adding keyboard shortcuts for assigning them to Parts?

The Action&Shortcuts Project section could have new entries - Part1, Part2… Part10 (and not more!) and every user could assign keys for them.

About importing Markers - I don’t know why someone (except film composers like Zimmer, Silvestri, Newman etc) could have more than one Marker track in Cubase. So assuming you have one Marker track, on importing .vlsprj (Media Project) the only (or first) Marker track could be imported as Song Track with Parts respective to the Markers in Cubase project. That simple! (sorry, @musicullum, last two words are written here a bit quieter  )

Next version

Use the Cubase Arranger track instead, it can be used to create Parts in VST Live.

@ArthurNeeman using Arranger track if willing to have PARTS instantly created under VL from the first moment it became available in VL. For me it’s also more obvious as Cubase ArrangerParts(ranges) meaning the same to me as PARTS under VL
warmly suggest, you won’t regret.
