VST Live sound issue + crash if same wav file is used for 2 different tracks

Dear all,
I have recognized a problem with VST Live 2.0 (also tried with the prerelease 2.0.6) which caused sound issues and finally crashes the application.
I use VST live just to have a backing track + 2x InEar track + DMX track
For the InEar tracks I want to have them on the outputs 2-3 and 3-4 on a RME Fireface UC but the wav file itself is the same.
If I create 2 Audio Tracks and load the same wave file for both tracks I get a lot of sound issues and vst live crashes after some seconds without creating any crash report under C:\Users\Your_Username\Documents\Steinberg\CrashDumps
It was checked on different laptops with Windows 10 and Windows 11…same problem.
If I make a copy of the wav file, rename it and use the same wav with different name for the second InEar track everything is working fine.

Best regards

a) crash means bail to desktop, or do you mena freeze?
b) Cannot reproduce this. Loaded the same audio file (tried various files) multiple times, even with 8 tracks no issues. Routed each audio track to seperate Out channels, located and played all over the place. So there must be something else, could you provide us with a .vlprj file? No need for other files, we can fit in audio files etc, thanks!

I don’t understand why you would want to do that. I can think of alt least two ways, off the top of my head, that would let you route a single track to many outputs.

  • Aux sends
  • Virtual audio connections.

A crash means bail to desktop.
Please find attached the vlprj file
example.vlprj (11,1 KB)
Thanks for the support

For some songs the files are different and for some not. I like to have the same InEar tracks for all songs, so that I have a standard layout. Of course I can aso just make a copy of the wav file and everything is working fine…but everything which causes crashes should be solved anyhow as this is the worst thing which could happen during a live performance.

Ah - that wasn’t clear to me in your original post.

Absolutely!
Thanks for the file. Cannot find anything wrong with it. Also tried to replace the two identical files with one local file, no problems either.
Are those files on a lame harddisk, or even not on a local dirve? That might explain the poor performance, but not the crashes.

That is unusual too.
Leaves us a bit in the dark, any hint or observation would be useful. Also checked the code, there is no appearent reason at all why this should cause problems.
Any information will help, thanks.

The import files are located at a Samsung SSD which is also to 90% free. So read issues due to low perfomance can be excluded.
The system is running on a fresh Windows 11 64bit without any additional software.
Laptop = RealmeBook
CPU = i5-11320H
RAM = 16GB
I also checked the System with LatencyMon for driver issues which could cause issues but even in case of a crash LatencyMon shows still very good values.

Wav files have been exported from Cubase in 24bit - 2116kBits/s
I have tried also other wav files with the same result. If I use the same file for 2 different tracks I get immediatelly sound issues followed by a crash. If it is a seperate file eveything works like a charm.

Windows is recording the following log for the crash

You drag those in, right? Or “File/Import Audio”? Doesn’t matter anyway though.
Could you locate those “WER” files, or one of them?
Maybe you have some disk tool, google for “PCH_EE_FROM_ntdll”, it possibly reveals some hints?

I tried both with the same result.

To upload the WER files is not allowed. So please find the result in text

No I don´t use any additional software or disk tool like samsung magican. It is a Win11 just with VST live and the required software for that.

Additionally I have done some more testing and recognized that if I will create a new project with the same setup without saving the project it runs without any problem. If the project is saved and then reopened I have again the same problem with sound issues and crash.

I also have to say that the wav files are 50min with 750mb

Thanks, will try that as well.
Unfortunately the wer file is not of much help, but still points to a drive access error.

One more idea…Do you have .peak files for that? One, or two? If so, and you delete them, can you then load the project?

Yes I have 2 .peak files. If I delete them I can load my project and they will be recreated…but problem is still the same

Thanks a lot.
We were still not able to reproduce it, but these are valuable hints.
You may try again with the upcoming version (tonight, if all goes well), let us know if there are changes. If it still fails we’ll provide a dedicated update soon.

I just have tried the Version 2.0.10 and 2.0.11. On both versions I still have the same problem.

I agree. Still the same error. Also on two different computers and different audio interfaces. Version 1 is free of this bug.

Can you please try to rebuild a project from stratch in 2.0.11, a new project.

Yesterday i tried to reproduce same issue in a new project and it didn’t cracled or crashed at all. Seems project related (maybe a project from v1 or older versions?).

Bye, Ciro.

I just rebuild the project from scratch with 2.0.11, same problem.
If I can support with more data/details just let me know.

We could identify the crash and it will be fixed with the upcoming prerelease. It should also solve those crackling issues. Thanks for helping.

The problem is fixed in Version 2.0.12. Thanks for taking issues seriously and continuously improving VST Live.
