Never before, it’s not HALion Sonic that requires a license, but this VST sound requires a license
Yesterday I got the same message: Install Missing VST sounds… But it showed over 10 GB… Hmmm?
Mine was over 26 GB. I only went into Download Assistant due to a warning I was getting on loading Dorico 6 that said something about needing to install (or update?) HALion Sonic 7 (maybe because I’d done the 7.5 upgrade a few days ago?). That’s when I found this particular update. Maybe the size depends on what you have installed on your system (and perhaps it updates them for HALion Sonic 7.5)?
Anyone found an answer or logic to this?
Just now doing some searching, I came across a thread in the Dorico forums that started last year with a similar problem, though there are some add-ons from the current situation:
It looks like there was some kind of bug somewhere, and this was installing sounds for libraries we don’t own, and the solution will be to figure out which ones those are (someone gives a list of what they found on their system late in the thread) and remove them via Library Manager.
Just to expand on this a little, because my results were different than the list the user gave in that thread:
His list included Aura, Beat Box, HALiotron, Model C, Trium, Voltage, and World Percussions. Those were all on my system, too. However, mine also included HALion Sonic Factory content, and when I looked in HALion Sonic, and specifically the entries for that library, I noted that none of the patches in it were available (all had the red key icon to suggest they needed to be activated). Thus, I ended up removing that, too.
The easiest way to find out what was installed on your system by this update is to go into Steinberg Manager and look at the installation date to see which packages match the date when you installed the patch. Then you can remove those packages.
Just as I was writing this, I realized I’d only looked at the HALion tab, but now I look at the Groove Agent tab, and I see there are additional packages there. I did not find additional packages with the same date in the other Library Manager tabs.
However, after removing all these, I now go back into Download Manager, and I again see the Install Missing VST Sounds showing up (it did not before removing these packages). This time the size is 18 GB. Hmmm. I’m conflicted about whether to try it again just to see what shows up this time. And I’m also wondering if maybe some of the packages I uninstalled (from the earlier 26 GB download) were ones I actually do have a license for.
