I have a synth plugin that tends to spike the CPU and cause a crazy amount of crackle, only when i select the track in the sequencer, without opening the VST.

This is one of the unfortunate side effects of VST Guard. Turn it off and try selecting tracks again. Does the spiking and crackling disappear?
If you turn off the Automatic track arm, it should not do that.
