VST3 plugins are buggy and very slow in Spectral Layers

I’ll check those plugins to see what happens here.

Here the following observations:

  • Chopiness seem to depend on FFT-size and Buffer-Size
Lowering the Buffer-Size allow higher FFT-size and vice versa.

  • While running a plugin with Preview and than trying to switch to another plugin, Spectral Layers crashes completely after around 5 seconds. The programm just closes, i. e. disappears.
It doesn’t matter which plugin is active or to which other plugin it should switch.
During the 5 seconds, the programm does not react to anything, like frozen to ice.
After restart comes the known “Recover Sesssion… Would you like to recover?”

  • To check with Audacity: Here it is running smoothly and we can switch plugins during playback easily.

@Sunnyman Do you have preview issue with other modules as well, or just the VST3 Effects module ?

Just using VST3

Same here as ctreitzell with FabFilters’ ProQ3 ans ProMB; they don’t animate. Have never done in any SL version.
I’m on Mac Studio M1 64 GB.

Speaking of VST3 plugins, the plugins from Plugin-Alliance/Brainworx don’t show any presets, the menus are not visible.
That goes for the SPL deessers and transient designers and the Black Box Analog Design HG-2/HG-2MS, as well as their amps to name a few. Been like that since the plugins function was implemented.

No crashes with any VST3 plugin though, ever. Plugin chains work well.

most of the other VSTs I have been using are all NR plugs
so, hoping to not use DeNoises and DeBuzzes anymore and use SL for those types of my NR

I do use Acon DeClick and will continue to use it…it’s just so easy

and I think the Acon DeClip is an excellent tool too…I haven’t tried those in SL preview yet tho

I’ve been trying out the VST plugins and noticed that on many of them, the parameters can’t be changed during preview. That’s not a good working situation. I’ll check my FFT settings to see if perhaps that has any bearing on it.

@Bernie_Beaudry Can you name a couple plugins that have this issue on SL11 ?

@Sunnyman can you give build 386 a try (win installer/mac installer) and let me know if you still have this desync issue with the VST3 Effects module ?

Hi Robin,

works much, much better now, like a charm.
Tried several plugins. Now, they work as expected. Very well done.
Thx a lot.

@Robin_Lobel I’ve tried to DL Build 386 from this link 3 or four times today, but it will not complete the DL

No issues downloading it again here.

Check your browser settings, cookies, add-ons permissions and storage available. Particularly your system needs to allow all from Google/Meta since it is a Google Drive link.

the DL appears to have worked now…

can I just install this right on top of my current SL11 or do I need to uninstall Build 378?

yes, easily installs to the existing install location

I’m scared to use SL even though I bought it because it is indeed buggy and has screwed up projects for me in the past.

SL11 is doing nothing short of the miraculous by giving users incredible power over editing audio. I put safety layers in my jobs and try to limit my destructive editing. I do use the clone tool a fair bit; but I do save my unwanted noise in a separate layer

It still has some latencies. Using the EQ-TDR-Nova plugin the (sync-)problem is still there. Not as much as before, but it is there.

When you mention latency do you mean on the gui aspect or latency in terms of audio?

I do experience latency but only gui latency.

It creates audible artefacts “clicks” as can be seen in the spectrum as vertical lines. And so it is in the audiofile
Synchproblem.zip (492,8 KB)

It works smoothly in Audacity and Wavelab.

@Sunnyman thanks I was able to repro the 2 issues with the EQ Nova plugin. It’s now fixed on my side, and should be fixed with the official patch 3 coming next week.
