While using System Informer on Windows 11 insider Preview to examine the VSTAudioEngine process in relation to another current thread here about unkillable processes, I notice it is always doing IO.
Why is that? I am engraving a score with Dorico 5 but not using the playback capability at present.
Fourth column is IO, always busy.
I also notice it takes 836 MB RAM which seems large.
That’s normal. The VSTinstrument(s) is loaded and the audio engine is immediately ready to go if you’d press the Play button. Also, the engine is always receiving MIDI.
Try the Silence template, that should look different.
@Ulf thanks. With Silence it still shows busy all the time. I don’t suppose it matters. I’m more curious than concerned.
So it’s busy getting MIDI from Dorico, is it, ready to play at an instant? Is that the concept?
With silence the RAM usage has gone down to 114MB,
@Andro, yes, the engine is always ready to receive MIDI from Dorico. But also MIDI-In. The audio engine opens the MIDI-ports to external keyboards or controllers and sends that MIDI data to Dorico.
And yes, that 100MB is the usual footprint even in silent mode.
