VSTEngine crashing systematically, possible Cantai plugin related

Dorico Diagnostics.zip (1.1 MB)

I Added Cantai 4 days ago. I used it some without obvious problem, only one vocal part in any piece using it. But of course I am suspicious.

Today I was working on a couple of documents, Dorico turned not responding, which happens anyway. I killed Dorico and VSTEngine, and now Dorico cannot reach the VSTEngine.

There is a fresh Diagnostic, so maybe that will tell us something.

Hopefully @Ulf will be able to help you with the problem. Have you tried rebooting your computer, open Dorico, does it then open? so at least you can do some other work with it?

I did not try anything like reboot yet, being lazy, I was kind of hoping that the diagnostic might tell us all :slightly_smiling_face: . But that might be the next step of course.

Thanks for the diagnostics, @pmc.galoubet.

They contain one dump file from yesterday 7:28PM your local time, and it is not a crashdump but a freezedump. The main thread is stuck somewhere in the mediaclient, i.e. it is waiting for a response from the MediaBayServer, but since that does not arrive it is hanging indefinitely. Btw. at the time the dump was taken there was no Cantai loaded.

At this stage I can’t tell what is going on there. Please continue using Dorico as usual and send fresh diagnostics if it happens again. Eventually we will get a grip on it and understand what is really happening there.

Thank you for your collaboration and patience.

Hi @Ulf,
Glad to hear from you again.

FYI, since last time you helped me, things have changed: I finally transferred Dorico from my old obsolete Windows10 Laptop to my brand new one. I did a full clean 6.30 install on it, since there is much more disk space, I kept the default sounds file location. I just imported some user settings from the old one, then I activated it, and disactivated the other one, I do not plan to use it all from now on.
Now, I have rebooted the system (yes @arco :slightly_smiling_face:) . When I launched Dorico, everything worked. There was something a little weird: while Dorico was stating, I got a popup warning from Activation Manager asking me to Activate Dorico. By the time I read it, Dorico had already opened the Hub window, and when I (re)opened the Activation Manager, it confirmed that it was already activated.
At the time of the “freeze”, I had been working with 2 versions of the same piece, an old one from Finale, and a new improved one. I had used Cantai in the new one, not in the old one. I was doing some copy/paste from the old to the new. The I noticed that cantai plugin item had disappeared from the new one (if my memory is correct!). I attempted to switch to the other window, and that was the moment where Dorico went “Not Responding”.

But for now everything is working, including the cantai vocal part.

I am not sure what to make of it. Shall we file it under unfinished business?

Hi @pmc.galoubet , good to hear that Dorico is now running more stable with you these days.

Now with that freeze that you had, well, it’s difficult to find out what was going on there. Let’s keep an eye on it and if you get more freezes or even real crashes, please come back and post new diagnostic reports here, okay?

Thank you for your dedication and collaboration.

Well I did have a strange series of weirdness since yesterday. Since it is very close I prefer to add them to this post.
First, I was working with 3 documents open, only one activated at a time, and suddenly, playback was only playing maybe 30% of the notes, whatever the part.As I was juggling with the documents, all of sudden I saw a new Dorico Hub popping! There were now 2 Dorico executables, I guess. I killed everybody and restarted dorico, this time playback did not start at all: after I clicked play from the start, the playhead appeared and that was all. Tgis one I solved with “Clear Audio Engine Cache”. After that all went well till now. I ws working with one document open, only one window. At some tome the mouse pointer hovered on Dorico task bar icon. I saw this:

Two windows, the second one empty. I tried to close it by the X widget of the small mock-window, and Dorico went Not Responding. I killed it and now again everything is “well”.

I am not really blocked. But this is not totally normal. Can all this be accumulated some where in the hope of some light coming out of it some day?

Thank you for your dedication and collaboration :-)!

Just a suggestion: I would create a diagnostics report after each incident to have a trail to figure out oddities. Most of the hangs and crashes that I have had were a one-time occurrence and it would have been nice to have those diagnostic reports should it recur. I rename them adding the date and time in an obvious format like mmddyyyy-1101 at the beginning of the filename (e.g. 071726-1351DoricoDiagnostics.zip).

At least here is the latest one. There is also a big freeze dump. Maybe the comparison with the first one might be fruitful?
Thanks you

Here we go again.

I was refreshing an older project. It is almost pictre perfec, except that I see a big rest under a Bar. Selecting the Rest gives me Bar 45, Bar Rest. All the Staves (4) in Bar 45 are full of items. The Staff is the 2nd one. After sme time broasing the help and the forum, I close Dorico. My first restarts fails waiting fro the engine. The second one gives me the hub, I ask for a Diagnostic, attached above. there is again a freeze dump.

Then I reopen the project. In the 45 Bar there is still a so-called Bar Rest in a full Staff Bar, but this time it is the 3rd one.
Yo are welcome to the project:

Entretien des Muses-4.dorico (1.7 MB)
(Stupid gui flushed my reply, sorry).
Now the Bar Rest is in the violin Player Bar 45.
Does anybody believe what I am reporting? I don’t :frowning: !

If you turn on voice colours (View>Notes and Rests>Voice Colours) you will see that you are using lots of different voices on each staff - which is completely unnecessary.

Do Select All, then right-click>voices> change voice>upstem voice1 (this will put all notes into a single voice and remove the redundant rests)

Actually there is a deliberate purpose to the outwardly unnecessary number of voices (but the purpose is very whimsical). This is a transcription of a (geniusly) insane harpsichord Piece from Rameau, where there is at least 8 different voices coming and going (Here “Entretien” does not maintaining, but chatting, There were something like 9 Muses, so when they have a party, it must be something!). When I did this (unreasonable) transcription for 4-some (violin and marimba can occasionally play2 voices, for a short time)instruments, I tried to keep aware of the different voices. And I did at the time use colors to see how my distribution of voices looked. Of course I tried to pay attention not to generate inconsistent bars through inconsistent voice changes. I think I did not do so badly, but obviously there were a couple of violations, that you pinpointed. I am going to fix them but for the rest, the project will remain whimsical. Even the idea of performing it is whimsical  !

I guess that the freeze at the same time is coincidental.

Thank you very much

A new freeze. This time I had one project open, I added a new one wanted to activate it. Everything collapsed. This time I had to reboot the system to be able to launch Doric.

So how did Rameau distinguish so many voices on a harpsichord? Are your voices sent to different VST sounds (on each staff)?

I f you are curious you can find Rameau parition in

around the 10th page (numbered 25!).

Rameau would not be able to play all the muses at once ( ), but he could play 4 lines at a time (somethimes perhaps 5). This is awesome.

Me of course I do nothing of the sort. I have cut Rameau music into pieces (approximations of Rameau lines) that I distribute to 4 different players, which just use the standard VST sounds of 4 channels. Of course that will not sound like Rameau’s piece played by a harpsichordist, with luck it will render something like it. If I keep a reference to Rameau’s “parts” it is to be able to remember how I did the piece-cutting. The reference has no impact on the playback.
Like I said, this is quite whimsical!

Thank you for your interest  !

Hi @pmc.galoubet ,

I had a look at the freeze dumps and they are always slightly different, but it appears to me that the audio engine’s main thread does get blocked because it is waiting for the MediaBay somehow. How long does a freeze last (in average) and does it ever recover by itself? And does it always happen when you swap projects?

And how well is it reproducible? If quite fairly well, could you consider a remote session?

Hi again @Ulf !

How long does a freeze last (in average)?
I Can’t really say, as soon as I g9t the Dorico Warning, I choose terminate to be able to pursue my activities again.
and does it ever recover by itself?
I always have at least to kill Dorico and the VSTEngine, but sometimes I have to reboot.

The scenario seems to be the following.
I am returning to Dorico after some time away from the laptop, Dociro having been hope with between 2 or 3 projects, one activated at the most.
Then I do swap projects, once actually opening a new project when there was only one open.
Then something weird starts to happen, but it can be anything:
Some abnormal behavior inside one (or several) project(s): faulty playback, or no playback, or what? I feel guilty of letting this post slip to offtopic by insisting too much on some weirdness which sometimes had no relation to the failure.
Some abnormal behavior of the Dorico windows
Just Dorico going Not Responding

how well is it reproducible?
This seems to happen once a day, i.e. every time I play that scenario, but no guarantee.

Yes I would consider a remote session. Compared to last time, it will be a new Laptop, Windows 11, more Ram and more CPU power, clean Dorico 6 installation. Alsomaller screen, I will be seated to a different table, my face will be framed differently  !

I have already forgotten exactly how we proceeded, but I think you will invite me to join.
When you are ready, should we would connect before I start the scenario, or should I start the scenario first, and call you as soon as something seems wrong? If the first things that happen is Not Responding, would it be too late for you to come in?

Hi @pmc.galoubet ,

I will switch over to private messaging now, please check the private channel.
