I am mastering a track with VU meters monitoring the pre mastered input track and the ref track, however with the fader down on the pre mastered track the VU meters are moving on. their own but there is no audio ???
All routing is fine Pre mastered to Processing, processing the limiters, limiters to mastered and mastered to ref, ref to stereo out
Any suggestions would be appreciated
I’m not sure if I’m following your signal chain description (this might be a case where a picture is worth the few words). However, one general thing I’ve experienced where meters are moving when I don’t think there should be any sound is when using plugins that simulate some form of analog warmth/noise – e.g. some tape emulators, analog-style compressors, console emulators, etc. – where they are also emulating the inherent analog noise, which happens even when playback is stopped. Is it possible you have a plugin of that sort somewhere ahead of the VU meters and either after the fader that is all the way down or in parallel to it (and not with a fader all the way down on that parallel bus)? Some plugins that do this (e.g. from Waves) also have a toggle that allows turning off the analog noise element, but that noise element may also be on by default in general for the plugin or turned on in specific presets.

Thanks the plugin VUs are fine on all other tracks it’s just this track for some reason?

Where is your metering plugin inserted? Did I miss it?
If you have a metering plugin inserted pre-fader and then lower the fader you’ll get signal.

@Nik_Bradbrook I think it would be helpful if you could take some screenshots of the track(s) in question (as well as at least one or two of the others that are not problems), showing at least the track routing, channel inserts, and sends) and ditto for the tracks that are destinations for those routing and sends, including wherever the VU meter is. It’s tough to get a view of possibilities from just the verbal descriptions. There are various ways to do it depending on the structure you are using and how far apart the tracks in question may be in the MixConsole. Sometimes the channel explorer can make it easier to see information for a single track to figure out what may be in the path to figure out what other tracks could potentially be culprits. Just as an example, here is the channel explorer for the main mix bus on my current project (still in the stage of working on the arrangement, so there is a lot that is disabled, but, other than for the disabled inserts, the settings on this particular group track are likely approximately how they’ll end up (other than possibly the specific inserts used in some cases).
What this tells me in relationship to the sort of investigation here (i.e. were I having a similar issue) is that there are 4 buses feeding this mix bus, I’ve got at least two plugins in here (albeit disabled at the moment) that are analog-style (not sure if they have noise elements, but equivalent plugins from Waves – i.e. on the exciter and tape fronts, and even on the bus compressor, which I know doesn’t have that here – could), that there are no sends to worry about downstream, and that this goes directly to the master bus (which would thus bear checking out for possible culprits, including sources other than the mix bus, though I happen to know the mix bus is the only thing feeding the master bus in my projects, unless accidentally, which has happened on a few occasions where I’ve forgotten to adjust some initial routing I use early on to suit my mixing bus structure).
