WaveLab Elements 8 problems

I’m new to wavelab elements 8 and have 2 problems,

  1. I have onboard sound, or alternatively a usb virtual 7.1 sound stick, but no sound card.
    when I selected record there is no signal going to the meters, I have tried many combinations of setup in the
    VST plugin screens can anybody help?

  2. How do you save say an audio layout, I get it how I want then, even if i lock it or change to the montage layout, it reverts back to default setting. When I enter back into Elements it is also in default layout

Would be very grateful for any help on these 2 problems
