I don’t look at the MasterSection all that often as I like to save my master plugins in the Inspector Output section (where it saves in the project) - but I just discovered that WL 12 keeps “forgetting” my dither plugin in the MasterSection “Final FX/Dither” section.
Sometimes I open a project and it’s there but other days I open the same project and it’s NOT there, i.e., the FX slots are empty. I add it, save the project and close WL then some time later I notice it’s GONE again.
What’s going on here? I’m using the Steinberg “Lin Dither” plugin.
Note that if you use WaveLab projects, these settings are saved per project. Hence, if you load a project, the Master Section settings stored along that project are restored, erasing the current ones.
Master section settings are not stored automatically with audio montages.
When you load an audio montage, the master section is never changed.
There is the option to associate and save a Master Section setting with a montage and restore it manually later. But I guess this is not what you are talking about.
Yes - so why DID it change? Again, all I did was close and re-open an already existing montage (XXX.mon file). I don’t typically mess with the MASTERSECTION at all. I have the dither plugin inserted there but that’s the only thing I ever touch.
It’s happened more than once but I can’t reproduce it intentionally to demonstrate. Will keep an eye on it.
BTW - I have always found it confusing that the MASTERSECTION settings do not save with the montage file. Why - for what reason - would you not want to save ALL settings that produced the final audio output saved in that file? How would we reproduce that sound (master) later if someone subsequently changed something in the MASTERSECTION?
It has been designed like this for many reasons, some of which you can find by doing a search in this forum. Wavelab is not only concerned with the montage. The program serves many other purposes.
As you already seem to know, many users avoid the issue entirely by simply not using the Master Section for montages and using the Montage Inspector Output section instead. Using the latter technique, all levels and plug-in settings are saved in the montage file. This would seem to be the perfect solution for your case.
There may never be an answer but my solution is to not use the Master Section for any actual audio processing. It solves a lot of issues and avoids a lot of headaches with how my brain operates.
I find it easy to not use it and I’ve never had a problem with a plugin in the Inspector going rogue because all these settings are stored within the .mon file as you’d expect.
I was working in WL12 for hours yesterday and all was well. Opened the same project this morning and the dither plugin was again GONE. I did nothing but re-open the same exact album.mon file I was working with last night and, again, I never touched the MASTERSECTION. No one else uses my system.
There is something wrong here. No one else has ever had this happen? Maybe it HAS and, like me at first, you didn’t catch it? Better look again!
Did you open this purely as an audio montage in the WL startup window? in other words open the audio montage file only?.. or did you open it as part of a Project file?
Yes, I opened the montage file from the Welcome to Wavelab Pro “Recent” list. I hadn’t opened or worked on anything else since closing that same file the night before.
It’s happened several times now which is why I posted about it here. If no one else has had this happen then it is an isolated situation on my system for some reason.
I would encourage others here to double check this on their systems. I typically work in the CLIP and OUTPUT sections and don’t pay much attention to the MASTERSECTION - so I didn’t notice this until recently.
Well, it happened again this morning. Opened the file, no dither plugin.
EVEN WORSE I also discovered it is NOT SAVING changes I make to OUTPUT section plugins! I can change something there and when I go to the FILE tab “SAVE” is greyed out. Turning one of those plugin bypass buttons on/off or changing something in the CLIP plugins DOES bring up the SAVE option.
I completely removed and re-installed WL per @marker instructions and IT DID NOT FIX IT.
