Weird Glitch VI Loading in Play Mode

Hi Everyone,

I have a strange issue. After updating Dorico to 4.3.2 I opened my orchestra template (the Spitfire BBC SO one) and added a new virtual instrument in Play mode into a new slot (#90). I added that instrument to a new synthesiser instrument (NI Kontakt) in my score and it kept playing back a Sting instrument instead. On screen a BBC SO String patch had opened up in a window that was now labelled as #90. My Kontack window was now saying it was numbered #93 whereas the slot it is occupying is still Slot #90 in my VST and Midi Tab of Play mode.

I’ve now replicated this multiple times after restarting Dorico and the computer (I’m running 12.6.3 on a Mac Pro studio).

Given this glitch its proving impossible for me to load the synth I need. Any ideas for resolving this?

Screenshorts attached. The diagnostic log is saying its too big to upload here.

Cheers!

It seems as if unfortunately Dorico and the audio engine disagree about which plug-ins are actually loaded into each slot. This is one of the disadvantages of the otherwise quite neat way that Dorico and the audio engine work together. Because the audio engine is a separate process, Dorico and the audio engine have quite separate representations of what is going on with regard to plug-ins, tracks, outputs, etc. In theory, because you can only tell the audio engine to do something via Dorico, it should be sufficient for Dorico to record every step that it asks the audio engine to take, and that should mean that they remain perfectly in sync.

However, we have seen a few cases like this where the data in the audio engine and the data in Dorico’s representation end up out of sync, and when that happens, unfortunately there’s nothing you can do apart from re-apply your playback template. Is that a practical step for you to take, or have you been laboriously building your 90 plug-in template by hand in this project?

Thanks for the explanation @dspreadbury that’s really helpful!

This is actually a modified version of the BBC SO Pro template (the one that was released in 2021) with some extra instruments added so I’ll try reapplying the playback template first but if that doesn’t work I can recreate my template without too much work.
