Weird playback - default staccato articulation on strings

Hey all

Fairly sure this was also happening in Dorico 5 as well - when I create a file from template the default string articulation when inputting notes seems to come out as staccato, and doesn’t return to a regular Arco until I hit the play button. Annoying - but what was really weird recently was using the “modern orchestra” the violin sound originally didn’t play, then after a few notes started sounding a flute. Any ideas why this might happen?

Here is the file I’ve been working on. As stated - have not messed with the Play settings in any way, just started a fresh blank score from the modern orchestra template and deleted some instruments.

Sorry I couldn’t open the file to check… Are you using NotePerformer with a NPPE engine? Because that’s one way to have the sounds from the NPPE when entering note (as staccato), the other way being mere NotePerformer sounds, reverting to the “accurate” sounds from the NPPE when play is activated.

This is what it’s set as. Would compressing the file help you open it?

I cannot reproduce your problem. (Sorry)

Hmm. I’m wondering if it’s a fault of my keyboard actually - under that sound set is there key switch articulation?

If I change the articulation for note input (eg to staccato) the audition note reflects that change.

Getting out of bed at 1:15am certainly would, but I am more inclined to stay in bed
Apologies, answering the forum is a hobby of mine with my phone, when my beloved half is still working until… God knows when!

Hi @eddjcaine, I can also not reproduce your issue.
Did you try to just reapply the Playback template?

Just tried that - no change…

Hey all so an update - I thought it could be my midi keyboard which has been known to output extra notes every now again somehow triggering a key switch, but unplugging it, restarting Dorico, starting a fresh score and using a completely different keyboard doesn’t change it.

On a fresh score having done this it starts out with staccato articulation, however once I’ve hit play then the note input returns to regular Arco playing. On the score above it remains staccato.

Is it perhaps in the defaults of Iconica Sketch? Does it default to staccato articulation until it receives an Arco articulation switch?

I think this is what is happening - opening a new score, going straight to the play tab and pressing the “e” to open the VST control panel, then mousing over the notes in Iconic produces staccato notes.

Is there a way I can change this behaviour? Like in the articulation panel there’s an Init articulation - if I add the legato keyswitch to that will it load it up on initialisation? But is there a way to do that for every score?

What is set as “natural” for that instrument in the playback template you are using?
