Weird Playback Problems in Dorico 6

This is the most recent version of Dorico, just downloaded and freshly installed on an otherwise new system:

Version 6.2.10.6140 (Mar 27 2026)

Dorico 6 AudioEngine Version 6.1.0.13

I’ve been away from Dorico for a while and am currently setting up a new computer after a failed upgrade to Windows 11. So this is a completely fresh install. I mention this because I don’t know if this is a Windows problem or a Dorico issue.

Playing back some of my earlier scores results in some very strange problems. In one case, a work for cello and piano plays well until about the middle of the work, when suddenly you hear two cello lines, approximately 3 measures apart. This continues for the rest of the piece, or as much as I could bear to listen to. This was originally created in Dorico 5 and worked fine then.

In another case, notes simply don’t play back. Typically the longer, sustained notes. This was created in Dorico 3, and it also worked beautifully back then.

Are these known problems, or just my bad fortune?

Thanks so much,

Pammy

These aren’t known problems, Pammy. In both cases, the first thing I would suggest you try is to do Play > Playback Template, choose the Auto playback template, and click Apply and Close. This will reset the playback for the project, and hopefully allow things to play back properly once more,

Thank you, Daniel. This fixed the sustained note playback. For the first issue, I think I must have done something odd when preparing the score. There are two lines in the cello part, one edited and one unedited, that only show up in Galley view. They are otherwise completely the same, so it’s a mystery to me why all of a sudden there is polyphony starting well into the work.

I downloaded Dorico 5, and the same playback problem existed then, so it’s undoubtedly my own doing.

Warmest,

Pammy

Did you at one time in creating the file have added staves that have since been hidden. Such extra staves are often “out of sight but not out of sounds..” If that is the case, one would need to recall/reshow them and erase the notes remaining therein.

Hi Derrek,

Thank you so much. Switching to gallery view shows the hidden staves, but they are exact duplicates of each other (other than bowings and fingerings).

The playback issue begins in the 3rd measure of the above. You can also see the polyphony start in the track view:

I’ve tried deleting one or the other staves, and a few other experiments, but without any changes. Copying the parts to a new score does eliminate the unwanted polyphony, but I haven’t been able to copy paste the entire score, not sure how to do that.
