What am I not understanding - .wav file with root key

Using Padshop 2.3 hosted in Cubase 15.0.21, Windows 11.

From the init patch, I’ve loaded a .wav sample that is marked with a root key of “F-1”. Speed “100”%", Duration “1000%”, Key Follow “0” - 1 grain. I play F-1, and hear the sample playback, but no other key yields sample playback. “Fixed” is off, Filter is off.

I change the root key to C-3. Playing C-3 yields nothing - no sound or playhead movement. Going back to F-1 (with root key still set to C-3) moves the playhead, and if I select “Fixed” in the Pitch section, I hear the sample. Move root key back to F-1, “Fixed” is no longer needed, but again, the sample only plays with that root key.

These are older .wav files (from Camel Audio’s Alchemy from years past). Am I not understanding the Padshop interface, or .wav files, or is there some sort of metadata in the .wav file that is not compliant with Padshop’s expectations?

Perhaps related - if I restore the root key to the native F-1, and set the Speed knob to 0, the playhead still moves/plays as if Speed was set to 100. I don’t see this behavior with another sample that seems to behave as expected.
