What are the white parts of this CC1 MIDI lane?

This is a screenshot from a demo for a VSTi that I have, and from the red-on-white Cubase logo at the top left it must be some earlier version (my v.6 and 11 were that color; v12; later versions are blue-on-white). I highlighted the CCI so it’s easier to see here.

When I do automation in a MIDI event, I just see the nodes and curves, no shading. So what do the lighter/white parts represent and how are those created?

I would say it’s just lots of values next to each other. Try to Zoom In.
