What constitutes a margin?

I’m inquiring about margins. I like the way Dorico automatically puts system labels inside margins. (I found this to be a pain with Finale.) When there are no system labels, however, it puts braces outside margins, and sometimes things at the end of systems extend beyond margins too, such as fermatas attached to barlines. I don’t exactly know what is considered correct for publishing.

I find Dorico always increases margins when printing. I had previously thought that this was just with my network printer at work, but it also happens with my Brother printer at home. It doesn’t seem to matter if I select Fit to Paper or Custom Scale 100%. The only way I am able to get correct margins is by exporting to PDF. Adding registration marks for publishing seems completely out of the question. There are probably some things about all of this I don’t know, but I’m curious what the community thinks.

Are you printing to the same size paper that you specified for the layout in Layout Options > Page Setup > Page Size?

The other things you mention seem correct to me. It would seem odd to have the positions of the left/right barlines adjusted depending on whether there are braces or hanging fermatas. (The treatment of staff labels is a slightly different issue.)

Yes, page size in layout options is correct. My printing at work uses a network solution called PaperCut, which is hopeless in that it gives you no control, but my Brother network printer at home should work correctly. I’m using the Windows driver, but maybe I’ll try the manufacturer driver to see if I can get better results.

I’ve never had Dorico change the margins on me. Can you upload a small project that doesn’t print correctly for you?

On some printers/setups, “Fit to Paper” will actually fit to the print area of the paper, which may be a tad smaller than the paper – because the printer can’t actually print to the very edges. However, Scale 100% should always print to the right size, so that’s odd.

Usually, you have to print the page on a larger sheet of paper, so that there is room for the crop marks, etc.
If you’re only printing black, then registration isn’t really needed these days.
