You. You are what stops them from gouging you every other week. The product you bought and paid for will still work if you choose not to upgrade. EVERY business wants your money. You decide whether they get any or not.
Sincerely,
J.L.
Indeed. If they began this gouging model, do you think that their products would sell as much?
I was told in some “how to sell” seminars/videos that the modern consumer is more educated now than ever before.
And then I see negative reviews…
But anyway, people catch wind of something like this and they’re not going to support it. Steinberg doesn’t have a monopoly on the DAW market.
I even think that this sort of thing is illegal in some countries.
If the Marketing dept. had called this Cubase 7 instead of Cubase 6.5 then most of the people complaining about paying for any upgrade would probably find something else to complain about, but they wouldn’t expect Cubase 7 to be free for Cubase 6.0.5 users.
I have no problem paying for the technological innovations I use. I don’t want to pay for bug fixes, expect those to be fixed like any other implied warrant on a product.
Lets see what is officially offered in the next few days and then decide if we want to part with our hard earned $$$ or not.
You know, Steinberg did a really good job advertising this. First they reveal Padshop, then once the hype is at its climax, news leaks that it is going to be in the next Cubase update! Woo hoo!!
But what if I activated Cubase on Dec. 31 2011 at 11:59? SB gonna let me have it? This is really a bad move to throw the most devoted Cubase users under the bus (again) telling them, "Oh well, you bought C6 too fast. " I think all the bug fixers will be on 6.4.9 then the cash deal with the features will be 6.5. Still I like the idea of the Soundcloud feature. Hey, who moved Audiocave’s video?! PUT IT BACK HERE, CHRIS (OR HENRE)!! You know the dark side doesn’t tempt us. We are obviously the most dedicated Cubase users.
Well thought, it would be nice if the users who faithfully buy the new versions of their software in the first days of release could have discounts on something, and not the other way around. After all, we eat all the first bugs and we are who report them first also…
How would you feel if you purchased a piece of software only to be told a month later to put more cash out?
It’s bait and switch.
Granted, existing Cubase users should get discounts.
For some reason, I think this will be the case. All in all, Padshop’s share of the price probably won’t be $50. You’ll probably be getting it cheaper. Likewise with whatever else.
Agree 100%. They suck us dry, although we feed them first. We feed them all the time, and they suck more and more, fixing bugs real slow… Let those who upgraded late pay for next upgrade. Even C6 was expensive bug fix. Yea, it had a bunch of new features, but what are they to me, i don’t use them anyway. I want old bugs to be fixed! Why do I have to keep paying and paying, just to finally get what I was promised and already paid for years ago.
That’s what happen to us, first buyers, now. The difference, we have been testing reporting bugs since the first day, and put the cash even without knowing what problems it could have.
The people who bought the software yesterday have it more stable, in part thanks to us. But they are who get the price.
I still stick by my guns and say that bugfixes and upgrades to the core of Cubase 6 will be free and that the extra add-ons are going to cost, but discounted.
Why “bait-and-switch”? You got, what you paid for. I cannot see any bait.
The only equitable policy can be: Every CB6 owner get this update for free or everybody has to pay for it.
And this one can only be a cynical joke:

Hi all,
The good news is: 6.5 brings a host of useful and great sounding features, and you’ll love it — just like we do. But yes, it won’t come for free - it simply can’t.
However, we are confident that this is a fair deal - consistent with our philosophy. In less than 24 hours you can make your own judgement - when we reveal the full picture >
All the best,
Helge
This is really bait-and-switch. Because everyone who read this can get the update for free, if he upgrades his CB5.5 CB6A or what else just now. And steinberg poleaxes the loyal customers .
I can appreciate that you’re playing devil’s advocate here, but I’ll just wait for an explanation from the source if I’m not going to get bug fixes and 64 bit rewire, going forward without shelling out more money.
