What the heck is this and how do I get dorico not to notate stuff like this?

Can anyone explain why Dorico puts a dotted half on the top staff of a piano measure but a quarter tied to a half in the bottom? Again, this is a piano staff so I’d expect dorico to at least assign some logic to notating things the same on the same staff. How do I fix this so that they match (either way - I just want them to match).

Go to Notation Options > Note Grouping and look for the following two settings, which govern each of the scenarios in your picture:

You can set them to your preference once, then save the setting as a default for all future projects.

The fact that this is a piano staff doesn’t factor into it. Things like note grouping are always independent, to maintain consistency.

I wonder if you have accidentally set force duration for one of those rhythms. I was also going to suggest looking at the notation options, but I can’t reproduce your example with any options.

Me neither.

This ended up fixing it. I’ve had to mess with this before to get dorico to display syncopations correctly so I wonder if it was set differently from a previous piece where I had to change the notation settings. Thanks for pointing it out.

Dorico gives me this notation, both in 2/2 and 4/4 time signature:

My guess is, that you imported this piece from another program - or you might have played around with options without knowing what they meant.

Good that you have solved your problem.

Dorico has default options (see my screenshot), but if you change them, Dorico will respect your settings/Notation Options.

This happened on one of my scores once and the only way I could fix it was by deleting that bar and inputting it into a completely new clear bar. No idea why it happened but it seemed like the bar was somehow corrupted although I can’t see how.

That is never necessary.
(But, yes, setting/resetting the right options can be confusing)

We sometimes wish to be able to enter this kind of notation. The way to do it is by using the force duration function. You can see that a note has forced duration by the blue symbol to the left, see picture.
To remove it is simply by clicking the clamp. To enter it takes several steps.

There are plenty of piano pieces with different cross-rhythms in each hand, so you wouldn’t necessarily want enforced conformity across both staves.

As ever, if you can upload a document, someone may be able to find out exactly which set of options is causing the behaviour.
