When entering notes in Dorico (and NP) the sounds differ from playing instruction in score?

Hi!

I have two questions:

  • I use Noteperformer and have defined pizzicato as the playing style (string player), but when I play live with my MIDI keyboard I always hear arco.

  • If I change the string player instrument to organ, I still hear the string player when playing live, and as before with arco.

Is this always the case, or can I change it so that I can play the current sound in the score when playing live?

If you’re using NotePerformer Playback Engines, I believe there is a setting in the NPPE interface to specify the default sound to use for auditioning.

Thanks David,

so Dorico does not switch sounds according to the score then?

It’s Daniel, actually. And you cannot blame Dorico for NotePerformer (along with its great NPPEs) has a special behavior!

@Daniel: My apologies, that was my autocorrect, I was talking to a good friend just before, his name is David. Sorry.

Excuse me please, but where did you see me “blaming Dorico”?

Probably a language problem on my side. I meant this is not something that Dorico can change, since it’s really a special thing from NotePerformer (as other things, like having its own mixer…)

There’s nothing wrong with your comprehension. (I inferred the same)

Maybe you are having the same language problem? Sorry guys, I was only asking back because I’m still in the process of getting my head wrapped around Dorico.

Yeah, but thanks, anyway.

Let me explain again, when I play a passage in Dorico with my input keyboard, I assumed that Dorico would play the sound as it appears in the score. Where pizzicato applies, the pizzicato string sounds, in arco passages the arco sound. But this assumption of mine seems to be wrong. And I’m not trying to blame anything in Dorico for my lack of overall understanding.

You’re perfectly right : this is the expected behavior, and on the top of my head, this is how it does behave usually. NPPE has a specific behavior, but if you are using NotePerformer without NPPE (or with the setting “listen through NotePerformer when inputting notes”), it’s what you should have. Isn’t that the case?

Yes, it is the case, but I want it different. As I said, I would like to play my input keyboard with the articulations as they appear in the score. When I enter notes with [K] (aka Speedy Entry for ex-Finalists), I want to hear the sound as it is in the score. During playback, Dorico switches the sounds at the right places in the score, e.g. to pizzicato. But if I then press Stop and enter further notes from this point onwards, I get a different sound, namely Arco.

Ok, understood, thanks for your help.

There might be some specific problems with the way the instruments sound when using the Speedy Entry mode (which is absolutely new and created for you, so it’s quite natural to expect some discrepancies here and there, although it is not what the Team has been getting us used to). At least it’s what I have read in some posts…

Dorico’s 8 years old since yesterday, and I think I’ve been able to keep up with reading every post of this forum until one month and a half ago.
If the Team does read everything, I really wonder when they get the time to work on Dorico’s development! That is something you Finale orphans do not grasp, because it’s been a shock for you (and we all are sympathetic for this and try to help) and because you didn’t have any reason to come here to see how it was. :person_shrugging:
If we want to help the team and unload their burden answering questions and helping other Doricians, it requires time and patience. Sometimes (because we come from all over the world) language plays tricks on us, and it’s always difficult to understand or convey some intentions on text alone.

Sorry Marc, but I have no idea what you are trying to tell me! I have questions about Dorico, so I’ll ask in the Dorico forum. Whoever has an answer can answer me. But I don’t think I need any instruction on how to behave here as a “Finale orphan” (which I am not, b.t.w.). And I may briefly contradict you, “speedy entry” was not made “for us”, but for Dorico. All Dorico users can benefit from it, and they do, as you can read elsewhere in this forum. And I think there is no reason to constantly defend Dorico just because others have a question. Otherwise, I have the impression that you still haven’t understood my question, but that may be because I haven’t explained it properly.

“That is something you Finale orphans do not grasp…” I think you could perhaps be a little more delicate with the language at this point. But maybe that’s just me. Never mind, let’s end this at this point. Have a nice day.

Of course. What I meant is that, although it has been requested for many years, the increasing number of users coming from Finale has decided the Team to implement it. Please ignore my verbose phase about the difficulties to keep this place a helpful and friendly forum ^^
