When I color a marker, Cubase 15.0.30 also colors events in my audio tracks

Win 11 Pro.
I am using exactly same process as in versions before : select a marker then use either the palette or fill tool, but now it also colors my underlaying audio tracks recording events.
Using Ctrl-Z (undo) resets the audio events to their original color and let the selected marker with the desired color.
Easy to repro.

There must be some other detail involved, tried here to

and didn’t see any change to audio events.

Make sure nothing else is selected anywhere before applying palette or fill tool to selected marker? Double/triple check..?

This. I always hit ctrl-shift-a (Windows) to make sure nothing else is selected before selecting the item I wish to color.

I am absolutely sure nothing else is selected.

I am using 4 screens but in Cubase 14 I was also.

Only difference in config is yamaha cc1 and softube Flow studio connected ? And cubase/Windows version 25h2 where it was 24h2.

My cpu is also different migrated from I5 14600KF to Core Dual 7 270K.

Since others are not seeing what you’re seeing, there is a difference in the exact steps that you’re taking, or the state of some elements in the project.

Have you tried the very basic troubleshooting step of reproducing the problem in a new project with just a marker track and some audio tracks with events on them?

I am already on a small new test project, 2 marker tracks in upper part, downwards one GA6 track and 6 audio tracks ( guitar recording with flow plugin and/or Neural DSP plugins).

I must add that this Cubase instance is a fresh one on a new Win 11 and empty ssd.

step by step repro?

I also see this issue some of the time – I’d guess about 50/50. It is something I’ve only seen in Cubase 15 (at least the last couple of updates, but perhaps even from the original release). It does not appear to be as simple as making sure to click somewhere other than on a clip, but I also haven’t figured out what makes the difference between when it occurs and when it doesn’t.

What I can say, though, is that, when it occurs, I just hit Ctrl-Z (i.e. Undo), and it undoes the color change to the tracks/clips without undoing the color changes to the markers or chords. (Yes, I’m pretty sure I’ve also seen it in changing colors on chords – I often change those to match the markers for the song sections those chords are in.)

Yes it seems to be random, as an exemple I get it all this morning even after restarting Cubase but restarting my PC this afternoon it disappeared ?
very strange, I can’t relate it to some change.
Gemini says it is a refreshing screen bug in Cubase…but why ctrl-Z fixes it ?

Is a Split Track List involved? I think I’ve noticed deselecting stuff in one pane doesn’t deselect in the other.

Definitely yes in my case. The above-the-split part is always markers on top (for song sections), chord track below that, then any tempo and/or time signature tracks (only if needed due to changes during the song). For example, here’s an overview of that part of my current project:

No regular tracks are ever in the above-the-split pane, though. And Cubase is obviously doing two steps in the color changes – first the marker (or chord) color change, then the other track change – or Ctrl-Z wouldn’t undo the latter.

Same here.

I have the same issue. Can confirm.

I can not confirm.

Also Windows 11 Pro, C15.030 Pro . Split track involved, tried different ways of colourizing the marker track - still nothing and I can’t recall that this ever happened here.

There are refreshing issues in Cubase (for example auto colouring tracks via PLE/Macro based on their names) but I don’t think that this has something to do with the issue at hand like you said. If this was the case then it would be enough to just select and deselect the affected tracks.

Yeah, I’ve never used PLE or macros for colorizing markers, and I’ve had the issue described here with the colorizing the markers colorizing something else, too. I do think there is some dependency on what you were doing ahead of the marker colorizing, but I don’t think it’s as simple as the case where you have to have something else selected in the main (i.e. lower) project window, when you select the markers you want to colorize (in the upper pane) and colorize those with the palette control. Besides, you’d think that, even if you had something selected in the lower pane, say a track or clip, then you click (not shift click) on a cycle marker (or a normal marker, for that matter, but I’m mostly doing this with cycle markers to use different colors for different song sections), that new selection should unselect what was selected previously. And the other weird thing is that the Ctrl-Z does undo the color change to the whatever got colorized the in the same operation when colorizing the markers but doesn’t un-colorize the markers. You’d think that, if you did validly have the tracks or clips selected in addition to the markers when you did the colorize, the Ctrl-Z would undo both changes.

After coloring my song section marker tracks today, and not encountering this issue, I was almost going to post that the issue seemed to have gone away. However, I also know it was something that didn’t occur 100% of the time, so I restrained my optimism.

Then I went to color events in the chord track. At first (colorizing the Intro section), it worked just fine. However, at some point after that, I wanted the scratch piano track to be active so I could check the chords I wanted, and I put the focus on that track. Note that I did not select the clips in the track, only put the focus on the track, which had everything turquoise (or is it teal?) at the time. Then I lasso-selected the chords in the first verse, brought down the color palette and recolorized them. Here is the result:

In particular, it left the main part of the track header alone, but recolorized the left bar that shows the track number and type and the clip (there is only one clip in this track, but I’m pretty sure it would have recolorized multiple clips if there was more than one). When I hit Ctrl-Z to undo, it returns the Piano track elements to their original color but keeps the color changes in the chord track.

By contrast, if I put the focus on the Structure (i.e. marker) track at the top, it takes the Piano track out of record mode, and, if I recolorize the chord track at that point, it does not recolorize the marker track or any markers.

I also tried just manually turning off the record on the Piano track – no difference. I also separately set the focus to some disabled tracks (i.e. no potential for putting in record mode), as well as a new-style group folder/bus track), also with no difference. In all these cases, recolorizing the chords I’ve selected also does the same sort of recolorizing job on the relevant elements of the other track, and Ctrl-Z undoes the changes to that track but not to the chords I’d just recolorized. (A second undo will revert to the chords’ previous color.) I also tried making the focus change in the MixConsole instead of in the project view, and it has the same results. (Of course, in the MixConsole, I can’t set focus to a disabled track.)

Oh, and one other finding after trying this with the focus changed in the MixConsole. While changing the focus within the project view shows the result I pasted above – here’s another example from a track that has no clips on it:

The change in the MixConsole does not have the mixed colors:

But, if I then go back to the project view and click on a different track (i.e. not the one that just changed color), the track color becomes consistent with the Chord track change:

That is, no mixed colors. But, if I now undo the change, I get the mix in the opposite direction:

That is, the part with the main track header controls stays at the changed color, while the left part reverts to its original color. I have to change focus to another track to get the original color to repaint for the main part of the track header.

And, just to confirm one additional thing, if I changed the color in the project view and got the mixed colors, if I click on another track (still in the project view), the track that changed colors repaints to have the left and main portion of the track headers, as well as any clips on that track, repaint to the new color. And, if you undo, it only partly changes back until you click on another track – even if you undo twice to get the chord color change back to where it had started.

So there is something about focus and repainting here beyond just the colorizing two separate elements instead of only what is selected when a track has focus.

BTW, I’m not sure it is relevant, but, just in case… I also have time signature and tempo tracks in the upper zone in this project, but with their visibility turned off (mostly to avoid clicking in the wrong track when trying to add chords, which is where my focus is at the moment):
