When I remove extra (redundant) time signature note spacing goes wonky

Really strange issue here. I discovered I had an extra time signature that was redundant (the two following 5/4 in the first screenshot). But when I removed the second the note spacing suddenly went completely wonky. What happened here? (I have all signpost set to visible)

Are both screenshots from Engrave mode (or Page view)? Any Frame or System breaks after the 4/4?

Could you share the file, or a cut down version of it?

Sorry but can’t share any files since it’s published. It seems that the culprit is the long tempo marking ("Poco piu mosso e molto rubato… ") If I just keep the eight note = 72, remove the text before and then add that as system text the note spacing issue goes away. Works as a workaround for now but I have had this problem a couple of times before and it would be good to know what triggers it.

(Both screenshots from page view and frame brakes both before and after + I had to lock the layout at this stage)

The reason is that the tempo text don’t want to overlap with the ritardando. As you said, switching the long tempo marking to system text makes the collision go away. I don’t know how your workaround with the extra time signature worked. I haven’t been able to reproduce that.

I could reproduce a situation where a time sig influences spacing. Obviously I recorded this in Write mode but system fullness was at 73% here. The rit. is attached to the first beat of the last bar. I attached the project if anyone would want to test this.

Perhaps unrelated, but perhaps not..:

Are these 2 separate tempo markings by any chance? I’m asking because of the distance between mosso and e which seems bigger than a single space. If so, check to what rhythmic position the second marking is attached. Shifting that might change spacing as well. (It might also just be a double space within the same tempo marking though.)

Yes. This is the problem. When I think of it I’ve had numerous problems with collisions of tempo markings in my pieces since I switched to Dorico (and this causing note spacing issues and other problems). I’m not sure if these problems is due to my lack of knowledge about Dorico (ex Finale here) or if this is something that is not functioning well in the software. I guess the workaround (for me at least) would be to use system text more instead of tempo markings.

The tempo marking is only one and the distance between mosso and e was due to a (unintentional) double space in the text. My bad.

It’s interesting though that the spacing issue only occurs when you remove the second 5/4 signature (as in my score). I can understand the logic that long tempo markings affect note spacing but why does it only do that in one of these circumstances? (And ideally I would rather not have tempo markings affect note spacing at all to be honest. I really can’t see the reason for this. I would also like to be able to have more than one tempo marking in the same place in the score but I guess I’ll have to submit that as a future request to the Dorico team…)

More than one tempo marking at the same place? What do you mean?

Do you mean a long tempo marking being broken up into multiple lines?

Or do you mean different instruments given different tempos? I don’t think that’s possible to get Dorico to play back, but you can put regular text in the tempo style.

In this case, when the set tempo comes up against a ritardando, I agree. But if it had been one bar or two followed by a new tempo, it makes sense to me that they don’t bump into each other. (But I wouldn’t mind a flag to disable the collision detection that would allow for special cases.)
