That is complete and utter BS.
Coincidentally, thatâs exactly what I think of your opinion.
OK, letâs keep things civil.
Here are some rambling thoughts:
Itâs certainly true that using an inappropriate size staff is a common âschoolboy errorâ, and if Dorico could provide help somehow in this area, that would be a good thing. But how that would work, I have no idea; and I doubt it would be easy to implement. The team are well known for taking their time until they can get it right, so I wouldnât hold your breath.
There are plenty of ensembles where you could get N systems per page with one staff size, and N+1 systems per page with a slightly smaller size. Which is âidealââŚ?
Doricoâs Layout Options default is Size 3 for both Score and Parts; and while one size will never fit all, Iâd suggest that more use-cases would be better served with a default of Size 4 for the score and maybe Size 2 for the parts.
But if I choose an Orchestral template in the âCreate NewâŚâ hub, the staff size changes to Size 8.
(Only the Orchestral and Band templates change the size, so Iâd suggest that at least, some of the other templates, such as Choral, ought to have a smaller size.)
However, automatically choosing a suitable staff size depends not only on the number of staves and the page size, but the âroleâ of the score/part. An Alpine Horn quintet will need to read the score from further away than a choir.
Inevitably, the best results will come from the user knowing something about engraving and layout. One canât expect Dorico to do everything, in the same way that Illustrator doesnât do graphic design for me.
