In the current iteration of these piano exercises, page numbers are not showing up reliably. I believe I am using the “default” template for most pages and the "first"template (As modified by Lillie) for the headings of the exercises. The page number tokens appear to be present, so I do not know why the page numbers are not always appearing.
{If possible please answer with a)What I am doing wrong, in simple terms, and where it is found in the manual, and b)How to fix the problem and what “guardrails” I can set up to avoid th eproblem} -
In this "multi-flow situation in which the page numbers are not showing, It is confusing to know exactly what page I am altering and also what page template is already applied to the curent page. Is there a secret to knowing this information?

{Again, a simple explanation would be helpful before pasting a link to the answer}

You have set “Hide the Page numbers when there’s a Flow Heading immediately below them” in Layout Options.
- There is an option in the View menu to show big page numbers for display purposes only.
Also, if you click on a page “icon” in the Engrave mode right-hand panel, the Page Template used will be highlighted.
Yes, as described in your earlier thread on the same topic, Manny
Also answered already in your earlier thread
I appreciate that you’re learning, and you are always so wonderfully polite, but please Manny, do read the answers that you’ve already been given. People take time to help you, it’s considerate to take that on board before asking the same questions again. If you’re having trouble accessing your earlier threads or otherwise navigating the forum, please do say so we can help you use this resource.
Deeply appreciate the input from Benwiggy and Lillie. However, I am not able to get the results you have indicated either with page numbers of highlighting of flow headers
- Per Benwiggy I went into layout options and selected:
Pagenumber in Header>>>Show above Flow heading.
This worked [Thank You!!] except in the “First” page template. In the case of this project (using Lillie’s solution) the “First” template applies to categories of exercises and thus it would be great if I could get page numbers at section changes within the project, as in page 8. I can certainly do without this feature if it is a pain. All of the “Default” page numbers are now visible. [Big Thank-you].
This unusual problem appears to be the result of the fact that I was following the path of making each exercise a different flow…thus triggering the “hidden page numbers” outcome. I never changed the page number setting in setup mode. I assume it is the default. It must have just manifested in this unusual circumstance of basically nearly every page having a flow header.
2.Regarding the highlighting of flow headings, that is not occuring when I switch pages. Page Template Highlighting (as opposed to Flow Headings) IS definitely working. However
a) As far as I can tell no flow headings are ever highlighted as I click on page icons in the right panel.
b) A good example is clicking on page 11 and then 12, which contains the flow header Lillie taught me, which I call “Above High Octaves”. As I click between page 11 and page 12 a) no Flow heading is ever highlighted and, b) the special Flow heading “Above High Octaves” never gets highlighted.
c) As a final test, I just clicked on all 14 pages in the right panel and never was a flow heading ever highlighted. Page templates were highlighted perfectly.
Any input would be appreciated

It’s possible (indeed likely) that flow headings don’t highlight, apologies for misspeaking based on just memory/assumption.
Page numbers are hidden above flow headings by default, yes: if you want to show them, that’s what the Layout Option is for.
Page numbers don’t appear on pages that use the First page template, because the First page template doesn’t have the page number token on it. You can add a text frame with the page number token somewhere suitable on your First page template, of course. That’s what the ability to customise and create page templates is for
When I have multiple flows that start new pages and use the First Page Template for each new flow (as when compiling the songstack for a musical), I add a page field to the First template and create a custom Page Template called First Without Page Number to use only for my very first page.
That way I only have to apply the special Page Template to one page, the initial page, and Dorico automatically applies the First with the page numbers for each new flow from there on.
Probably didn’t know about it.
Thank-you Lillie -
The learning process makes me feel like a caterpillar climbing an oak tree but I will crawl ever upward
Unfortunately this set of exercises uses many “First” templates and I only need page numbers on later “Firsts” So I will make a “First_with_Page#” template I assume…so that the VERY first page does not have the number.
Benwiggy this is cool. Under which menu is this located?
Layout Options. It always pays to browse the menus and dialogs.
