Where do you store your 3rd party plugin libraries?

Hi all,

Where do you Personally store your plugin libraries?

Ive always sored them on a separate Drive from C:, but my other drive is critically full, so I may have to store a new VSTi library that i bought on my C: drive which has an abundance of memory.

Would anyone recommend i move some of my current plugin libraries I have on my other drive to C: drive to make room for much needed space, or could that cause some problems? Next month i do plan on buying a new SSD and transferring all of my data from the almost full drive to it. but its not a plan completely set in stone. It could be the month after.

SSDs are very cheap now.

Run out of space, buy a new one.

Consider removing libraries that you never use.

Avoid storing large libraries on main drive.

I suppose as a rough example I’ll give you my setup. Some libraries are huge. So I have one drive dedicated to Toontrack. One for EW. One for Kontakt. One for general samples. One dedicated for audio and projects, that’s an ME. One for other slightly smaller collections etc.

Yeah thats the plan, my secondary drive is only 500GB which is terrible. I can pick up a goo 2TB drive for under ÂŁ100 like i did with my main C: drive when that started to crumble and was getting full.

“Consider removing libraries that you never use” - that’ll be a load of kontakt libraries i downloaded but don’t have the right version for  - ill give that a try.

my computer is SFF so there’s really only space for 2 drives unfortunately, though there are sockets for 4.

But as long as i can just transfer all content to one drive to the other, and change the drive letter to the same as the old one & have no problems then i should be set

Use the smaller drive for projects. Keep it clear of everything. Just dedicated for recording etc.

You probably won’t even need to worry about changing drive assignment letters. Most instruments etc. will allow you to easily choose a location for their content, wherever it might be.

Perfect, even better. Do you have a program recommendation to get the transfer done? The drive is in Good health, no bad sectors or anything that im aware of..

and a i just realised i replied to myself replying to you.. odd mistake.

Tbh just move the files manually. You’re only moving libraries so no complex manoeuvres involved. But worth checking in each instrument what the procedure is to move library location.
For the Steinberg stuff use library manager.
Some will even have a built in feature to move the libraries. (UADx for example).

I shouldve made clear, There’s much more on that drive than just libraries, I also need to make sure modification dates remain as well for the Cubase projects I have on there. I have far too many plugins to check how to move each one unfortunately (I will check each plugin until i give up), but there’s a way around all of this. I do have a few library managers so they’ll do the trick for some.

cloning might be the best way in my case as it preserve all file and folder timestamps, including the modified date

Understood. And yes each case is different. But bear in mind you’re not moving actual plugins. They should stay on the main c drive. It’s just the data that some of them need that gets moved.

Anyway, I think you have a good handle on it now. Good luck. :folded_hands:

…and I am humming for no apparent reason. Mother Mary!

My pleasure. I’m sure others will have more to add. But I think you have it covered.

Would be interested to hear how you get on when you’re done.

Whats the need for this comment? I’m clearly speaking to someone who knows what they’re talking about and has a really complex setup based on what they’ve told me. I could tell without needing to see proof or ask for further questions - they knew exactly what I wanted to achieve, and even opened up on on his own setup which i appreciated. I may follow a similar setup in the future. I knew the man was experienced and well informed pretty quickly.

I’ve been making music long enough to be able to easily separate newbies from advanced users. cutting out the bullshi**ers . . .@Phil_Pendlebury provided me good advice, and possibly the best way to store multiple large or small libraries if your setup allows it. :ok_hand:t5:

Absolutely, if i remember, ill let yo know how it goes. it has to happen asap because I’m down to 5GB left on my secondary drive  . So next month it’ll begin!

Just saw your setup, nice. liking the organisation!

Hi,
you got it all wrong. I was simply referring to the opening line of “Let it Be” by The Beatles: “When I find myself in times of trouble Mother Mary comes to me speaking words of wisdom.”

Your reply with “words of wisdom” triggered humming and that’s when Mother Mary arrived at the scene. It wasn’t meant to be some sort of open or hidden criticism on @Phil_Pendlebury 's very helpful and informative answers! Not at all.
I am sorry if I caused any sort of trouble. Next time I will keep it to myself.

I got it. I was about to reply that it was just a harmless comment. No offence taken, (by me at least). But you know how these forums work sometimes. :folded_hands:

No way ever ever do I plant vsti etc samples etc themselves on the C drive….and yes, that’s one reason my C drives (4tb nvmes on all win11 systems) have lots of space….as yours does apparently atm.

Your D drive is “critically full”? Go 8tb. That’ll buy an extra possible few years.

My D drives are all 8tb nvmes now as they were reaching the soon-to-be-critically full levels when they were 4tb. All my Cubendo projects…vienna symphonic..toontrack…ik max everything etc etc.

To me, it’s vital that everything is on those 8tb drives as it’s (among other things) super simple to copy the entire 8tb to external 8tb for safeties.

It also keeps the C drive free for mainly os, system installers storage safety folders…which, for me, makes it extremely easy for me to do clean installs of the C drive…..no way do I want a pile of vsti data sitting on a C drive.

Go 8tb.

If your D drive is already 8tb and yet critically full nonetheless….time to go to two 8tb data drives as drives D and E.

Not telling you what to do….but that’s my mindset on these things

Ooop.

I truly apologise @Reco29 . Never keep to yourself, be expressive as you want. I was in the wrong as i didn’t understand/recognise the reference.

“you know how these forums work sometimes”.. hmm, I just didn’t understand a 54 year old beetles reference.

I thought it was a literal shot mocking my praise for you.

You learn something new everyday.

Apologies to all.
