This is a simple question that Dorico’s online manual just won’t answer. It discusses the project-wide setting for slash region counts, but it doesn’t mention where to find those. Does anybody know? The only answer I get is how to change it for individual slash regions as described here: Steinberg.
Engraving Options > Notes > Rhythmic Slashes > Count
Thank you so much! I eventually found it on my own, but not thanks to the online menu!
I’m not certain this is the appropriate place to express my frustration with the Dorico online menu, but here it is.
In the menu, it states this: “In Dorico Pro, you can change the start count of each slash region, how frequently counts are shown, their staff-relative placement, and whether counts are shown with parentheses, without parentheses, or hidden. You can also customize the count font style.”
Why in God’s name would they not inform the reader where and how to change it? Just add a little link to, for example, “how frequently counts are shown”, and it would be so easy.
The related links at the end often do not explain the “how to’’’ of what is the main topic.
For newcomers, this makes learning Dorico significantly more frustrating.
Here is the section of the menu I was referring to:
If I go to that section of the manual, I can see on the left that there’s another section called “Project-wide engraving options for rhythm slashes”. That section has the info you’re looking for.
If I search the manual for “rhythm slash counts”, that page is the first result returned. Even searching for “slash region count”, that page shows up (further down in the list).
In general, I find the Dorico manual very helpful and well organized – much better than what Finale and Sibelius offer.
Thomas, I had to just scroll down, and there it was!
EDIT: Scrolling down only reveals the “per instance” settings in the lower zone, my bad. But @asherber is of course correct, just look to the left!
Best,
Benji
No I see this when I click on the link, but when I do a search for “changing slash region count”, I don’t see those links on the left. It looks like this:
True, that search doesn’t bring up the page you want.
If you click Return to table of contents having clicked on a result on the right-hand side, you’ll see the page you’re currently on in the context of the overall document structure.
Wouldn’t this be the ticket? I get it, it’s labelled as “tip” and thusly appears as somewhat “optional”, but still, it’s right there!
Thank you all!
Yes, you can find it by bending backwards over. However, I think the way it is presented is overly complicated and time-consuming. For example, it’s frustrating when I’m told what I can do without being given immediate instructions on how to do it. This is a basic concept that every manual should follow, and I encounter this issue frequently with this online manual.
It’s really frustrating, and it’s definitely not straightforward or clear-cut.
I’d have to disagree respectfully:
If finding stuff in a manual is just a matter of scrolling down, I wouldn’t call it overly complex…
“How to” in the Steinberg manuals (if I am not mistaken) involves a verb ending in “ing”: changing, adding, hiding, deleting.
Look for those search terms.
