Whole bar breve multi bar rests

I am working on a piece in 4/2 time and in some parts there are consecutive bars of whole bar breve rests. These do not consolidate into multi bar rests.
Is there some way of achieving this?

Provided they’re regular bar rests, they should consolidate just like any other bar rest. Can you attach a cut-down version of the project that demonstrates the problem?

Probably best shown as a visual!

But I’m not sure how to attach an image to this reply

We really need the project file rather than screenshots in order to work out what’s going on.

The breve rests are obviously entered manually, otherwise they wouldn’t be positioned at the start of each measure. Simply delete them, and make sure you set the global option (can’t recall where off the top of my head) to display whole bar rests as breve rests in 4/2.

Barber Adagio for str.dorico (1.4 MB)
The original comes from an xml file ex photoscore.

@ PjotrB. The breve rests were not entered manually and you can’t delete them! As the score comes from an xml file ex Photoscore I suspect it could be be something to do with that. Photoscore XML output does have some strange outcomes at times.

Try:
View signposts and then use Edit > Cut to remove the time signature signposts in those bars.

@StevenJones01 Thanks for that. Interestingly the signposts show as ‘6/2 (h,1+1+1+1+1+1)’ but change to ‘4/2 (h,1+1+1+1)’ when I delete them and only a partial consolidation! Definitely a case of Photoscore XML strikes again.

Sounds like you need to restate the 6/2 time signature at the start of that section, otherwise the last time signature (4/2) will take effect in those bars. Or, maybe just delete the 4/2.

I think the best (and quickest) solution will be to re-do that section elsewhere and cut and paste it into place. One is never quite sure what is happening under the surface!

One other thing to try if there is a breve rest stubbornly stuck at the start of a bar is to select the rest, press shift-B and type rest, then press Enter.

Better check your rhythm in bars 15 & 16. I only see 4 1/2 beats in bar 15 and 1 and 1/2 in bar 16. Perhaps a barline was manually misplaced?

Check bars 53/54 (The violas clef change should be immediately after the pause, so those 3 notes are mis-transcribed)

To delete the signposts, select the barline (not the signpost) and hit delete. The result is I think correct.

This is undoubtedly the case. PhotoScore will have encoded those bar rests as explicit rests, presumably because some applications would otherwise handle those bars incorrectly. But Dorico doesn’t need its hand held in this way, and you might in future consider reviewing the settings on the MusicXML Import page of Preferences, turning off as many of those options as you feel comfortable with – that will allow Dorico a freer hand when interpreting MusicXML, and should hopefully result in fewer of these kinds of issues in future.
