So I wrote out a scale using whole notes, and now that I think about it, I want it in quarter notes. Because who has time to wait for whole note scales to finish playing.
When I select all those lengthy whole notes, and select the quarter tone from the left pallet, it, yes, changes them all to quarter notes. With dotted half rests between. If I then choose edit/delete rests, it, yes, deletes the rests. But only in appearance. It still takes the time to wait a dotted half rest between each note.
So Obviously I’m not holding my jaw right.
How do I compress the scale down to sequential quarter notes without weird rests or invisible rhythms?

Try this:
Select all the whole notes.
Press I to turn on Insert mode.
Press 6 to change the value of the selected notes to quarter.
Press I to turn off Insert mode.
Hmm.
Works If I do that one note at a time.
If I try to do all at once, it erases all the notes after the first one.
That’s strange.
Before I posted, I tried it out for myself just to make sure that I was giving the correct instructions.
Weirdness.
Make sure that you are selecting ONLY the notes - either marquee select or click on the first note then shift-click on the last note.
I was able to able to reproduce the behaviour you described by using Select All - this selects other things as well.
Say, now that makes a difference.
Since my over-lengthy scale took up more than one line, drag-selecting all the notes picked up more than it maybe should have.
Thank you!
There are many ways to make selections.
If your drag-select gets more than just the notes you want, simply apply the filter right-click>filter>notes and chords
Alternatively you can: select the first note, ctrl-click on the last note, then ctrl-shift-A to select all similar things in between the two. This works for many objects, like text or dynamics.
