Why are these triplets connected?

I want to delete the triplet on the downbeat, but it also deletes the one in the previous measure. Is there a way I can determine why they are connected? Hitting U has no effect.

Thanks

Michael

When you created the triplet, you had the quarter note as the unit, rather than the eighth note, so Dorico has created a single triplet containing three quarter notes (or six eighth notes).

There are a few different ways to fix this, depending on the surrounding context. Based on what I can see from your screenshot, here’s one thing you can try.

  • Select the tied notes and press U to untie them.
  • Select one of the 3’s and press delete
  • Making sure that the eighth note duration is selected in the left panel, press ; and then Enter
  • Retie the notes that should be tied

Alternatively, for this small case you might prefer just to delete both beats (notes, rests, and tuplets) and re-enter.

When you create a tuplet, Dorico by default uses the rhythmic unit that’s selected in the left panel; if you want triplet 8th notes, select the 8th note duration before starting the tuplet. Or you can explicitly specify the unit in the popover: 3:2q for three quarters in the space of two, 3:2e for three eighths in the space of two.

I didn’t think to look at the popove, I’ll try to remember that next time I have an issue. I wound up deleting and re-entering. Thanks!
