Why does every new version have to be so frustrating

I’m at a point where I don’t know what is a bug and what is an intentional change to the program. It’s really getting frustrating and I don’t know why Steinberg can’t just improve and leave well enough alone. Drum editor in lower zone doesn’t seem to work the same as it used to, old and drag only creates 16th notes, at other times only eighths, but never what I want.

It’s an old tale and this is an old article that still has some resonance:

There are no recorded changes to the Drum Editor from C14 to C15.

You definitely do not need longer notes for drums

Hi @Wickham_Sky,

can you give us a screenshot (or short video) of what you exactly did, and how you got to this result? Did you open Drum Editor in the lower zone as usual, on a selected (empty) MIDI clip, or what exactly did you do?

Sidenote, if applicable: Step Input and Grid / Length Quantization (in Step Mode) in my lower zone editor seem to work as expected (Cubase Pro 15.0.20).

Cheers,
Markus

Hi @pavlii,

some Jazz drummers, marching band drummers and orchestra percussionists might disagree (snare rolls, timpani rolls, etc.).

Markus

Ohh…I forgot, sorry my mistake. Even that these are just a few so I do not see any problem with manual editing the length in Info line for example (but well - I am not sitting in front of my C15 actually so maybe I am incorrect again :-D).

Hi @pavlii,

no problem, I was just nitpicking a bit.
You’re basically correct: regular drumming uses mostly note lengths of a quarter note or less, including dotted notes (syncopation) and rests, so for most drum patterns this would be more than enough to define a specific rhythm. Rests of the same - or shorter - lengths are being used to fill the occasional rhythmic gap, if a note or phrase becomes longer, like a half note / half bar length.

Cheers,
Markus

So I checked that. You can use:

  1. image this field to specify the length of newly inserted notes
  2. this field to show the notes as “bars” instead of “diamonds” so you can change their length in a “Key Editor” style (dragging)
  3. image as I wrote previously use this field and mouse wheel to change the particular notes length

Hope this helped

@Wickham_Sky is right. EG One used to be able to left-click the title bar of the Inspector tab to change the Track colour. After an upgrade to 12 or 13, can’t remember which, this was no longer possible. It was a year before I discovered that it had been changed to Alt+click. No info about the change in the release notes. And why the change?
Same happened with the Preferences dialogue - since day one, 1989, the Windows version had the Preferences under File, then in C10, 20 years later, it gets moved to Edit. Again, why? Another year for muscle memory to adapt to a pointless change.
Some Options in the Hub have been moved off the main window. Again, more work, and for why? Who knows.

Regarding “The Freedom To Not Upgrade” - this just means the freedom to not enjoy new, useful, and possibly essential, features. Not to mention the loss of support.
