When I switch modes, for example from Write to Engrave or the reverse, why does the interface jump?
And why is it overall so sluggish? If for example I want to edit the contents of a text box, it’s slow to let me do that after I double-click on the box, whereas in Sibelius it happens instantly.
Unfortunaetly jumping wildly in thr score and open lists in many situations is since years an issue and never seems to make it high on a priority list of annyoing issues to be solved. Switching modes, activation of IVP, switching filters in galley view. and often even when you link an instrument in the inspector make the inteface lose focus and land somewhere randomly in the instrument list or score dependent on the starting point.
It would really be great if these issues would finally be addresed in an update rather than adding new features.
When you say “interface”, do you mean that the music jumps to a different position when changing mode? If so, that might be because you are using one of the “fit” zoom levels. When you change mode, the geometry of the music area changes, which causes the zoom level to be recalculated, and can cause the music to move. Use one of the percentage zoom levels instead of the “fit” level, and that should help.
Switching modes if you highlight a note, keeps the last chosen location and you can go back an forth without “jumps”. However if no note is highlighted and you move the score without highlighting and switch, Engrave and Play will keep their last location before switching when you go back (which is OK) but Write jumps back to the start of the piece (which is probably not desired). The same with or without instrument filters.
Swiching between filtered views always seems to work when you highlight a common aspect like a rehearsal mark or a bar line. Just highlighting a note in one view works maybe 90% of the time. Sometimes 1-2 views will not be at the correct position. So it is already a lot better than just after the introduction of filtered views.
The screen view jumps in a multitude of different ways that depend on various factors that are beyond my ability to cope with them all.
I request a non-jump mode so the music simply stays put, no matter what mode your are in, how large your window is, whether you have something selected or not, what the zoom is, what voice you are editing etc. It doesn’t “help” by moving to the next system, the next page, the next occurrence of that voice or whatever. And it stays put when you change mode with the panels open or closed.
The fact that the panels are attached to the editing window doesn’t help the situation because it becomes an impediment to keeping the work space stable when switching modes. It would be so much better for so many reasons, if the panels were detachable.
With something selected, the music itself kind of does a boomerang when I switch back and forth between Write and Engrave. It jumps horizontally over an inch or two and then jumps back again to where it was.
What I’m seeing pretty consistently between different scores, with nothing selected (I just open a score and don’t touch anything) is:
When I switch back and forth between Write mode in Page View and Engrave mode, the music stays in exactly the same location.
When I switch back and forth between Write mode in Galley View and Engrave mode however, with each change into Write mode, the music takes a small jump towards the beginning of the piece. Depending on the length of the score it then takes fewer or more iterations to reach the start of the piece, and once it arrives there, the jumping stops (it doesn’t reverse direction or so).
This is with one of the fixed zoom levels.
As soon as I select something, this behaviour stops and the view stays focussed on the selection, although that needs to be taken with a pinch of salt: after one switch between Write and Engrave mode and back to Write, in Galley View the selection will from then onwards always be located at the very right hand edge of the screen, even if it was somewhere else on the screen when you started off.
