Why does the score editor change the syncopation option when using the swing quantize?

In the score editor I sometimes need to change the “syncopation” option. I usually use the “relax” setting because it doesn’t tie so many notes and looks more modern. However, If I quantize my midi using the “swing” function it nulls this setting and Cubase brings in the ties again. How can I keep my “relax” setting and still quantize my midi the way I want using the swing setting?

(I notice that if i deactivate “shuffle” in the score settings dialog box, it does respect the tie setting but then it puts each swung 8th note under a bracket so it is no good)

Here is a pic of what is happening

In this pic I am currently using the swing at 100% in my quantize settings and in my score settings I have “shuffle” activated so it doesn’t show brackets for every 8th note. That is fine, However, I don’t like the ties across the first beat. The relax setting should not look like this and the second note should be displayed as a quarter note not a tied 8th note.

That should not be necessary. You probably have Auto Quantize checked.

Thank you. I deactivated “auto quantize” and it works except when I have triplets, they are shown as normal 8th notes. Look at this screenshot

Those three 8th notes I circled in red are wrong. They should be quarter note triplets. Can you please tell me what settings I need to change to achieve this?

You would use the Display Quantize tool.

But there might be more to it. It also depends on the exact start locations of the notes.

It might be a good idea to read the section of the Score manual that covers the Settings Dialog.

Thank you. I have read it. In that manual it says that Auto quantize is used when you have mixed straight notes with triplets. You are saying to use the quantize tool. Isn’t “auto quantize” supposed to do this?

You are not showing what the start and end times are for the notes, which does matter. Are the Quarter triplets quantized to Length and start position? They probably have to be.

Also, if you have 8th notes set for the display q in score settings, I think using Shuffle is not necessary. Do you find that that’s the case in your projects?

Hi Steve. Look here please

They are totally quantized to the grid. Those three triplet quarters should come out as three quarter notes with a bracket and 3 on top. I don’t mind using the quantize tool but thought that there might be a way without the extra step since what I am doing is very standard.

Please post the entire window, info line and all, and just one staff/track. I ran out of aspirin and can’t buy any more till next St Smithens Day.

I suspect that you have deleted the triplet symbol attached to those notes.
In this case, select the three notes and the rest in the Score Editor, then apply N-Tuplets to them (again), using the following settings: Type 3, over 4/8 and hit “Quantize”.

Thanks Maestro, I never used the N-tuplets feature but I gave it a go and it did work. However, it was not necessary, I got it to work with the “Auto quantize” which also should work since my triplets were quantized perfectly. Going back to the original OP the reason I think that my “Relax” syncopation was not working is because it is incompatible with “Auto Quantize”. You can use “Auto quantize” but only if you are ok with having very rigid syncopation in your score else the solution as you have pointed out is to use seperate quantize values for the section only and not use “Auto quantize”. Please tell me if you disagree.
