Why I don't use WL9 a lot

I get this too, on Windows, but only about half the time, and I sill don’t know why. It’s been like this for me since at least Wavelab 8.0.4, and I still haven’t figured why it’s ok sometimes but other times not. It’s really disorienting when it happens. “Include zoom level” is always turned off in my settings.

For me, it usually happens when I’m zoomed in close to tweak some clip start times or fade ins. I’ve reported the issue and hopefully we see a fix in the next update, but here’s an older video I captured of it for the report:

Ditto, ditto, ditto! Please Steinberg listen to nkf. I think it just make sense that WaveLab should feel “familiar” to Cubase/Nuendo. My work is heavy and I have to work fast. I don’t think I should have to learn a new command set from the same vendor. Like nkf, I too decided to go with WaveLab out of loyalty, even though I was happy with Sound Forge for many years. It’s not as sophisticated as WaveLab but it has a clean, consise user interface that just makes sense. I really love what WaveLab has to offer. But it’s just not intuitive to me.

PS. Why!? Why!? Why!? does every update of every Steinberg product I own, cause me to lose my PREFERENCES!?

I do still see some cases where choosing “Undo” will cause the zoom level to change dramatically (usually zooms way out) even though I have WaveLab set to not change zoom level for Undo/Redo.

Check this:

Why!? does every update of every Steinberg product I own, cause me to lose my PREFERENCES!?

There is no instruction in the installer, or WaveLab to do this.
Maybe you use some “cleanup utility” that does this behind your back.

I think we both have that checked PG. It continues to happen to me in Wavelab 8.0.4 too (even though I have “undo/redo including zoom settings” unchecked), and has for some time. (I go back and forth between the two versions). I can’t reproduce it because I have no idea what I’m doing different when it happens. It’s a strange one, but I’ll try to pay better attention next time it happens.

One thing. I think it only happens when I’m using multiple tracks.

I daily use WL 9.0.25 on both the Mac and the PC. No problems with either as far as the problems the OP is having. Maybe the OP should spend an afternoon with nothing else going on to really learn all the new features of WL 9. A lot of what he is reporting seems like “operator error”.

Maybe there are still issues with RME and Wavelab that could be tested. There were quite a few complaints about RME and Wavelab a while back.
The plugins you mention in your previous posts I haven’t seen mentioned by anyone else. Maybe no one else has tried them with Wavelab on Mac? Accusonic, Lexicon, others?

Hi PG, I do already have that option checked. It also doesn’t happen all the time, just sometimes. I mostly notice when I’m zoomed in close to really fine tune some fades, clip crossfades, or clip starts/ends.

I do not see any close button on any File tab.

If I start a basic Audio Editor project (16/44.1) - mid-window I see 7 tabs in the “Audio Editor” frame.

File, View, Edit , Insert and Process. Then a bit of space and two more tabs - Analyze and Render.

If I click the File tab - the only thing remotely resembling Close is a big “X” at the end of the File tab which then says “Hide Window”. If I click that - WL makes something disappear and sticks me into something called Current File - Untitled 2?

I mean wow - how intuitive is this? What the heck is Current File - Untitled 2 and what am I to do with it? Did I even ask for this? Or does it just assume I want it?

For at least 20 odd years - in WIndows - when I was using typical MDI applications - if wanted to close a “project” in other apps - or maybe even other versions of WL - I would go up to File - ON THE MAIN MENU - at the top of the program window and choose Close.

Then the app would clear out - looking about as empty as possible so I could choose File->New and fire up a new project. Then the interface would fill in - the bits and bobs needed for the project type/template I selected.

To make it even more confusing - your File menu - at the top of the program - does in fact allow me to start a New project, Open an existing one - but does not allow me to Close anything.

In my opinion - this is horrible design and it’s no wonder I am lost here.

At least show me where the actual Close button on the File Tabs are - and I mean the Close button that actually closes the item I am working on - not the button that “hides” something and then creates another unknown entity that I did not ask for.

There is also no instruction “Not To”. I think the programmers failed to tell the installer to “Merge” all Preferences and User Presets, and so they get over-written.

PS Except for WaveLab. Just upgraded and at the beginning it detects previous installs and ask’s to import your user settings! Thank you Stiny but, why doesn’t Cubase do this?

Wait, I’m confused. Wasn’t this the topic where we complain about the WL9 UI?
The same that was so applauded upon release? :sunglasses:

I really want to break out clapping…but do not understand some of the design decisions here.

So much so - that I find specifics (as noted) of the new UI incredibly frustrating :frowning:

Justin, did Steinberg say they could reproduce the problem? I have a multitrack montage (it seems to be montage dependent to me) that does it every time that I’ll probably strip down and submit to them anyway.

I do not see any close button on any File tab.

Just move the mouse over a file tab, and you will see it.

All I see is the word “FILE” pop up when I hover over the File tab?

I’m not sure the status but you can be sure it’s reported to the correct place. I should have shown in the video that I do have that preference checked so that undo/redo doesn’t change the scroll/zoom but that is definitely the case.

Maybe another reported case would help too.

I thought you meant a wave / montage “file tab”.

If you want to hide the FILE view, then

  • click again on the same tab
  • use the X button at the extreme top right
  • click on the wave/montage miniature at the top left
  • press F3 or ESC

You can close every file (e.g. wav, montage) or file group (e.g. group of wav files) by clicking the “x” which appears if you move over the filename. One file group must always be open, so you can’t close the last one.
What you can’t close is the current “project” you are working on, which can consist of several file groups and many different files. If you are done with your project and you want to start a new one, you can just create a new project by using the files tab. This automatically closes the current project as there always can only one project be open. Of course any project can be saved and reopened later on.

BTW, I use the project concept extensively now and use the project-manager window (opened by ALT+F10) to close and open all my project files. This is for me the best way to keep the overview on all files and file groups of my current project. I can only encourage everybody to have a closer look into the project-manager…for me it works fine, especially when I have to deal with different sampling rates within one project. In these case I create a file group for every sampling rate which makes my life much easier.
