Why is Cubase still crashing on opening, reopening and closing

Why is Cubase still crashing on opening and closing? (windows 11/ cubase 12)
This bug is here for quit a while now and nothing seems to be done about it.
First with CB12 it happened many many times. Then I thought it was getting better but suddenly again my cubase is crashing so many times. It is frustrating and even embarrassing with other people around.

I tried all the suggestions made here on the forum (deleting preferences and so) but nothing seems to really help.

I worked with cubase for so many years, always rock steady but now every time you open or close cubase it is just wait and see if it is gonna go or not.
And when it is crashed the only solid way to do is restart the computer cause otherwise it is going from bad to worse.

What is the matter?

Peter

Hi,

Attach the crash/DMP file, please. Then we can tell, why it crashes on your side.

It’s not a bug Peter - it’s something to do with your system/configuration. It’s likely a mis-behaving 3rd party plug-in

That can very well be the case.

But I think cubase should be capable to see there is a vst not right, report it but not crash completely. The program is not usable any more after such a crash. You have to restart the computer. I mean it is serious bizniz.

Furthermore I had the same plugins before and there was no problem. Just as I never had any of these problems many decades before.
I thought the change came with cb 12 or maybe the change with not using the dongle anymore.
Of course I dunno. Just a feeling.

Anyway, it is very annoying.

Still a cubase fan though.

Hi,

As I said… If you provide us the *.ips/DMP file, we can inspect it and let you know, where to focus to find a solution.

Ok, here are 2 files. Don’t know which is the right one.
Ver curious what it will tell.

Cubase 12.0.70.464 64bit 2023.10.25 14.19.20.309.dmp (1.5 MB)
Cubase 12.0.70.464 64bit 2023.10.25 13.06.17.059-freezedump.dmp (1.0 MB)

Still I do not understand if the cause of the problem are wrong plugins, why does it crash at random and sometimes not. I’d say then it crashes all the time because the plugins are there all of the time.?

Anyway, hope this can shine some light on this matter.

Hi,

One freeze comes from an issue on the Windows side. You are using the old Windows WDM MIDI Driver. Try to enable the current WinRT MIDI Driver in Cubase Studio > Studio Setup > MIDI Ports Setup, please.

The other one seems to be related to the MIDI Remote. What MIDI Remote Device do you use, please? Do you use any factory script or a custom script?

Thanks very much for looking into it.
This midi driver I switched recently from the default because one morning at startup, completely out of the blue the midi was not in sync anymore??? After googling I found this as an answer and it works.
There was no any difference in cubase crash/freeze behaviour after I changed this.
For me it all started with cb12. At the same time I stopped using the dongle.
Before that I never had any problem (for decades!)

I have a nameless little box with 3 assignable faders and my keyboard is the NI Komplete Kontrol A25 with lots of control knobs, I don’t use.

Still I do not understand why it freezes/crashes at random?
If the causes you mention are the the reason for the problem, why doesn’t it crash all the time at startup?
It is definitely not connected to certain cprs. The same cpr can crash at load but next time opens fine.

Hi,

Could you please post more of the DMP files to find out, in which area are the most crashes?

Here are a lot more!
Cubase 12.0.70.464 64bit 2023.10.25 13.06.17.059-freezedump.dmp (1.0 MB)
Cubase 12.0.70.464 64bit 2023.10.23 13.00.50.002-freezedump.dmp (874.4 KB)
Cubase 12.0.70.464 64bit 2023.10.23 10.36.49.227-freezedump.dmp (729.2 KB)
Cubase 12.0.70.464 64bit 2023.10.21 10.17.23.751-freezedump.dmp (1.6 MB)
Cubase 12.0.70.464 64bit 2023.10.14 17.03.45.466.dmp (601.5 KB)
Cubase 12.0.70.464 64bit 2023.10.13 10.30.00.968-freezedump.dmp (749.2 KB)

and here a few older ones, before I changed the midi driver

Cubase 12.0.52.393 64bit 2023.3.5 15.10.43.847-freezedump.dmp (1004.0 KB)
Cubase 12.0.52.393 64bit 2023.3.3 15.05.55.106-freezedump.dmp (695.0 KB)
Cubase 12.0.52.393 64bit 2023.3.3 11.13.17.685-freezedump.dmp (785.4 KB)
Cubase 12.0.52.393 64bit 2023.3.2 18.57.32.611.dmp (1.1 MB)

Hope it makes some sense!

And thanks again for trying to help me out.

Hi,

I have resolved all Cubase 12.0.70 DMP files. Most of them are related to the WDM MIDI Driver, which is a known Windows issue. This means you should enable the WinRT driver in Cubase Studio > Studio Setup > MIDI Port Setup.

  • Then there was one MIDI remote-related crash, as I mentioned already.
  • One NI Kontakt crash (make sure, the plug-in is up to date).
  • Dropbox Extension crash. Do you use Dropbox? Do you save your projects on Dropbox? Do you load any data from Dropbox (libraries, Audio files…)?

Ok, I managed to put the WinRT driver back.
But again, before I switched midi driver Cubase crash/freeze behavior was not any different.
Will see what happens now…

The A25 is just my midi keyboard, no plugins…

Dropbox, yes I do use it. But Cubase never loads directly from Dropbox, only from my ssd disc.
I do download files (also audio) from Dropbox to my computer every now and then, but I wonder how can that have anything to do with Cubase??

Hi,

Maybe delete all the DMP files, you have until now. If it’s still crashing after, send me the bunch of the new files. We will see, where the crashes are.

If you don’t load the file directly to Cubase (i.e. if you copy the file to your local drive first), then Cubase doesn’t know. But if you interact with a file on Dropbox any way, Cubase knows.
