Why is my "y" disappearing?

So: I am working on a Ukrainian song with translations. I am using Palatino for the English singing translation (as vs. 2 on the attached). I am also using Palatino in a couple of text boxes, and the “y” has disappeared in all of them. I can not get them to show up on my screen or to print, even though, as you can see, they are fine in the lyrics.

What the heck?

Вийди Іванку - Full scoreB - pg16.pdf (82.0 KB)

Looking at the fonts embedded within the PDF, it seems that your lyrics etc. are using Palatino Linotype whereas the text frame at the bottom of the page is using Palatino. Perhaps there’s a glitch with your installation of Palatino.

The obvious suggestion would be to ensure you’re using Palatino Linotype consistently within your project.

All right, that solved it - many thanks.

But why on earth should the Palatino font refuse to access the y?

What OS platform are you on? Did you create the PDF using Dorico’s graphics Export?

A quick test here shows the MacOS system-bundled Palatino works fine when exported from a Dorico project as a PDF.

… though OS-bundled fonts do have a reputation for being not great.

I’m on MacOS (Sonoma 14.6.1). Yes, I did create the pdf through Dorico, but the “y” was invisible even within the program itself.

If you haven’t already, reboot and see if that fixes it. Is the y missing in any other app?

Nope, I’ve never seen this anywhere else. Rebooting doesn’t seem to make a difference. Luckily, Leo’s Palatino Linotype point seems to have worked.

I wonder if it’s a conflict between Palatino and Palatino Linotype, as I’ve never used them both in a single document before…
