Why "letter" (and not A4) is the default page size for instrument parts?

I wouldn’t recommend that. Dorico is rendering for the paper size chosen in the layout options. If you chose another paper size in the printer dialog, it’s just gonna resize/scale the Dorico layout to fit the paper.

Hello all… Down the page size rabbit hole. I checked the default paper size in the operating system and it’s US Letter. I just started a new project and checked the defaults in Dorico/Layout options and it’s set to US Letter (I had saved that as a default). I went to the Print tab and the paper size still says A4.

I have the preferences set with North America as follows:

I did notice that when I tried to change the layout options to return to Factory setting, the Size in the Layout options turned to A4 (presumably ignoring the North American setting in the preferences).

I’ve had Dorico since 2018 (version2) and wonder if perhaps a legacy setting is messing this up. Thoughts?

I’m not sure what to try next. Any suggestions?

It’s expected that when you click Reset to Factory, the page size shown in Layout Options will be A4, because that is indeed the factory setting. We could change that such that the preference for Default paper size type is taken into account when you click Reset to Factory – I will make a note of that.

However, I’m not sure why you’re ending up with A4 chosen in Print mode by default. The way that choice works is that Dorico asks your printer to list the page sizes it supports, and provided it lists the paper size chosen for the selected layout, that page size will be chosen. Any printer that supports Letter typically supports A4, and vice versa, so therefore I’m not sure why you’re ending up with A4 chosen there, I’m afraid!

Dorico 6.1 on MacOS 15.6.1

System Region is Canada

Printer has Letter page

  • Till I changed in Dorico Preferences Default page size type to “North America” the Layout default page size for A4. What does “Automatic” mean in this setting?
  • I always see A4 in Printer Page Setup that doesn’t make sense because Dorico should use the selected printer (I have the only one) configuration like other applications do in the system.
