HZ040.dorico (776.4 KB) The four measures of tenor at the beginning of the chorus don’t want to stay stem up. Why won’t Dorico let me switch the stem down ones to stem up? Bass is supposed to be resting during these measures.
I assume you meant the “Refrain”?
Before the “fix” I should mention that you have a gazillion voices in that tenor melody. My count is seven! This will make things tricky when it comes to rests/stem directions.
The fix…
- Select all the notes in those bars and make them Up-stem Voice 1 (Right-click > Voices > Change Voice > Up-stem Voice 1).
You should now see them all pointing down and with no rests (N.B. the bass notes will temporarily be in the same voice in the fourth bar)
- Add a bar rest.
- In the first of the bars, activate the caret
- Make sure you are about to enter into Down-stem Voice 1 by pressing V to cycle through the voices (the small, orange notehead should be pointing down with no number)
- Press Shift+B to open the Bars and Barlines popover
- Type rest into the popover (to enter a bar rest)
- Close the popover
There should now be a bar rest and the notes are pointing up.

Select the rest and press R to repeat it.

In the fourth bar, select the two bass notes and change their voice to Down-stem Voice 1 (Right-click > Voices > Change Voice > Down-stem Voice 1).
Does that solve the problem?
Yes, thank you! I’ve been doing “shift v” for changing voices - apparently that’s adding more voices than I need! Your instructions fixed the problem. Thanks!

Ok, but last time I had a thank you comment after the message that was marked “solution”, an automatic message popped up rebuking me for commenting after a “solution” was marked (and it just did it again as I responded to you here).
V to switch voices; Shift V to add a new voice. (Shift something always adds things.)
That’s expected. You can ignore it, or you can write your thank you first and then mark the solution.
