Windows 11 24H2 no go

Do the custom installation and install the Display driver only, don’t install any of the additional software such as PhysX, HD audio driver, NVIDIA App, GeForce Experience etc.

Let us know if this fixed the issue or not.

Thanks I’ll do it again and remove all that stuff. Will see if it works :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I’m skeptical that it will resolve the issue, but let us know if it does.

Are you able to explain in a little more detail what kind of Cubase performance issues you have notice over time with Windows updates ?

It’s worth a go. I’ve had random things like the sound still playing while cubase freezes. Sudden plugin crash (I understand it can be the actual plugin). I sometimes got a crash when changes out FX while playback is happening. Nothing major but it seemed to happen more after these updates. Enough to make me worry a little when using Cubase. Sometimes the crash drumps had a file but no info in them. I reinstalled everything last week and cleared all prefs etc. Not had any trouble.

One odd thing. Sometimes if I open say the stock stereo plugin (The one where you can widen or even turn audio signal to mono) That sticks when trying to close. I have to press esc a few times for the plugin to close. Again not a major issue but thought I’d mention it. (This appeared in 14 for me)

Damn, that’s quite an interesting range of issues. This is why no one likes Windows updates.

I don’t really know what else to suggest other than re-checking over general Windows settings (Power settings, Startup Apps, etc) the usual stuff. Hopefully someone else can help you.

The fresh install has worked so far. The only thing I’ve noticed was last Friday the real time usage went a bit high for no reason suddenly. Once I closed cubase and restarted it was normal again. I admit I’m a bit OCD with that so don’t have it fully on show now. Wasn’t causing any issue either. Everything was playing fine. Hasn’t done it since.

edit: I use the Stienberg power plan

I prefer to set the Windows power settings manually. I can’t find any official Steinberg Cubase documentation that explains what the Steinberg Power Plan is and how it works. I assume it’s just some automatic nonsense that only activates when Cubase is opened, just sounds like a recipe for potential issues to me.

Ah ok I am not sure what to setup then. I had “high performance plan” before.

I don’t know what settings the Windows high performance plan changes either. This is why I do everything manually, I don’t rely on anything that’s automatic or if I don’t know exactly what it changes.

There are screen shots of my power settings above in this thread if you’re interested.

It’s pretty easy to see what Steinberg’s Power plan is doing. Turn it on, keep Cubase running and go check out power plans from control panel. There you will see Steinbergs plan, and you can click it and look around at their settings. It’s pretty much doing what you’d expect.

That’s great, maybe you can include it in the Steinberg Cubase documentation

Jokes aside, I still prefer to manually set all of my settings and have them permanently set. I do not support anything that’s automatic and dynamic. I prefer manual and permanent.

Yeah, I hear you! The funny thing is that Steinberg’s plan looks exactly like the one I created. The only reason to use it would be if I wanted one plan for Cubase, and another for other things. Well the only thing I do on my work computer is Cubase - and occasionally Reaper, Protools, and Spectralayers (usually run that in Cubase).

I am deeply scarred by Windows and Cubase as you might have already realized :scream:. I have trust issues.

But Cubase on Windows is ok for you?

No, Cubase performs quite poorly on my computer. The performance meter is ok, but I experience a lot of other issues such as the application terminates unexpectedly, VSTs that cause Cubase to terminate and disappear, older project files becoming corrupted when opened with new versions of Cubase, Cubase freezes if it’s open for too long (like 1-2 days). Just heaps of strange issues.

Oh sorry. Has Cubase always been like this for you or recently?

I’ve built about 4 computers specifically for Cubase between 2007 - 2017. Unfortunately Cubase performed poorly on all of them or had strange issues in one way or another.

I’m currently on a Intel 8th gen computer i7 8700k cpu, Z370 motherboard chipset that was built around 2017.

I think i’m just going to put up with the issues for now and wait for AMD Zen 7 or whatever is next after Nova Lake for Intel before building a new computer, so probably around late 2027.

Have you thought about switching to Mac? I worked with mac and then built my own PC in around 2014 or 15, and it has worked flawlessly– it’s just old. Thinking about next move for desktop…maybe Mac, maybe buy from a company that builds PCs (I don’t wanna build one again). Things just seem to work with Mac without endless tweaking. And I don’t wanna be a tweaker, in every sense of the word.

Mine is a AMD Ryzen 9 5900X. Cubase has been the one most sensitive. Studio One and Reaper were/are fine.

I’ve thought about it but i’ve also seen plenty of MAC users having issues with Cubase also. It really does seem like the lottery on whether you get a computer that works well with Cubase or not.

Honestly I plan to switch to Bitwig as my main DAW eventually.
