this has probably been asked before but will the 2 be compatible? I am about to buy a Steinberg audio interface that comes bundled with Cubase AI, also does anyone know what version you get or is the latest version that is downloaded.

Yes, Cubase AI 6, AI 7 and AI 8 are all compatible and supported with Windows 8 and 8.1. Be sure to update to the latest build. You can find the build updates on the www.steinberg.net page under Support>Downloads>Software.
