Windows Update Blocker

After somehow letting some Windows Updates through to my laptop, the laptop started behaving poorly. I could play back my MIDI files, but I couldn’t input any midi from my keyboard to Cubase 15 Pro. The Activity light was showing on my MIDI Interface, but no MIDI Activity was showing incoming to Cubase as I tried to input my playing from my piano.

After trying to troubleshoot and uninstall some drivers, etc. I gave up and, luckily had an image file backup which I had done 2 weeks ago.

Loaded and operates fine now. In order to save the frustration, I have now added asmall app called Windows Update Blocker. You can choose to have it block any Windows Updates, but will still let updates for software such as Cubase through.

I will try it for a few weeks and see if it helps. I know you can pause updates for 5 weeks on the Windows Update page, but after that, the updates come through again. I am hoping this blocker does the trick and prevents nasty surprises from derailing your work…

Forced updates are an abomination.

Method 1 should disable auto updates permanently.

I totally agree about those forced updates…They can destroy whatever you had working properly and can spend hours trying to track it down to fix the issue. As you say, ‘an abomination’!

Thanks also for the other info on disabling updates with you link. All great information!

Great people and so much good knowledge and information form this community!

Thanks to all.

NB - Microsoft started to roll out fixes for their new Midi system. By the end of May '26 everybody should have received it, or at least be able to get it.

Thanks for the new information. I am just so leery of any update, especially when my system was working fine without issues. I’m to the point where I am now ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’…
