Wishes for usability tweaks

Dear colleagues, when working long hours in Dorico, some little things just accumulate in taking away time or being disruptive – I took the liberty of writing them down, hoping they will get some attention in a future update:

  1. using arrow keys to navigate left/right between notes does not work if they have been crossed to another staff (using M and N shortcuts; grand staff instruments)
  2. tuplets starting with a rest: please enable the tab key to switch selection from the tuplet to the rest (currently only works when the tuplet starts with a note) – the same goes for texts, playing techniques or fermatas attached to a rest
  3. engrave mode: the switch layout key doesn’t work when a stem (or a tremolo, or a clef change, or an instrument change text) is selected, even though these elements are clearly attached to a specific staff
  4. related: when clicking directly at a notehead in engrave mode, it will so often select the stem instead, even though the tip of the stem is so far away and can be pointed at easily anyways! Please consider shifting the priority to the notehead until one clicks at least somewhat nearer to the tip of the stem.
  5. in engrave move with a hairpin selected: the tab key might cycle through the anchor points more intuitively in visual order (left top to bottom, then right top to bottom), and not jump between them. Otherwise one can’t work as quickly but has to look and react.
  6. when selecting a note that has a fingering and opening the fingering popover, the existing fingering should be highlighted; ready to be changed – same as when you use arrow keys to navigate to the next fingered note; because I think one would far more often want to change a fingering in this situation, rather than append to it
  7. allow creating nested tuplets also in the reverse order: small to big (e.g. select three consecutive 3:2e and put them inside a 3:2q)
  8. tuplet numbers jump horizontally when initially nudging them vertically in engrave mode using the arrow keys

If I may add some more remarks:

  1. navigating up/down (using arrow keys) through chords containing altered unisons or unisons in different voices doesn’t work as expected (notes are skipped)
  2. in engrave mode → vertical staff spacing mode: being able to navigate between the anchor points with the arrow keys, like in the note spacing mode would make working much faster
  3. and generally in engrave mode: being able to navigate with the arrow keys to the next object in the vicinity, thus minimizing the need to reach for the mouse would be nice
  4. when changing e.g. a piano to a forte, please keep the relevant modified properties like offset etc.
  5. a function/key-command to vertically align two selected objects in engrave mode would be great, as it is hard and slow to get an exact alignment using arrow keys

Regarding the “right click → Edit Font…” functionality:

  1. it would be nice if this command could also work for instrument change texts and warnings, as well as when selecting fingerings (in engrave mode)
  2. in certain options dialogs when opting to use a plain font e.g. for fingering numbers or time signatures or tuplet numbers: it would be nice to have a button right there in the options dialogue that takes one to the font style used (in the paragraph styles dialogue)
  3. a bug: the command doesn’t point to the correct style for repeat indications like “Play 4 times” (should be paragraph style „Repeat Count“)

I agree that a lot of those points would help to smooth the workflow. Regarding this one:

…are you aware of the Increase Dynamic Intensity and Decrease Dynamic Intensity commands?

(They’re also under Edit>Notations>Dynamics).

You can assign key commands for these commands. Changing dynamics this way will keep any changes you made in Engrave mode. I only recently found out about these commands and I find I’m using them more and more. I’m almost at the point of assigning key commands myself. :grimacing:
