WL13 feature idea Locators

Hi, @PG1

Ideas for WL13

Locators type selection when exporting:
I use locators for track stuff, loops, regions, etc.
Nevertheless, when I export, the only locators I need are track locators.
Currently, as far as I understand, we can choose if we export locators or not.
Idea for next WL: choose which locators are exported.
When I send files to clients, etc., for tape or cutting, I only want to keep the track locators (the red ones), so it might save a little bit of time.

For painful plug-ins like Bettermaker stuff:
it would be great if we could choose them to disconnect when we move out of the clip (the clip the plug-in is in).
The plugs have this disconnect thing, like an on/off switch;
it would save a lot of time having this change state when the cursor is not on the clip.
It could look like this: we pick this function in the automation menu, we choose what function changes state when we are not on the clip, then it switches immediately when the cursor goes on the clip.

Let me know if it makes any sense.

Best,
Olivier

What about the dedicated delete funtion?

There is an option I tried in the past (“Dyn”, see below), that was originally used for UAD plugins, but AFAIR, @Justin_Perkins told me this does not help.

For a plugin such as Bettermaker, I guess the only solution would be a special mode where a single plugin is kept alive, and where a new preset is injected just before a clip boundary is reached.

@PG1 Yes, the DYN option doesn’t seem to help for plugin controlled hardware like Bettermaker.

This is part of why I still use REAPER for my analog play/capture work (for projects which use analog gear) and then I finalize things in WaveLab.

I had a REAPER script made that lets you use the Bettermaker plugins like you would expect to. No automation, no snapshots, no preset saving, etc. You just put a plugin instance on each item/song and with the script, the hardware changes accordingly without getting confused.

This video is old but it shows it better:

The video is old and days I only have the Bettermaker EQ, but the issue remains. After 6 years of asking Bettermaker about it, I don’t think they’ll change anything. The plugin was designed from a mix engineer point of view where you have a DAW session for each song, but it was not considered from a mastering engineer point of view where you have all the songs in one session and use Clip/Item/Object FX.

Also, I just ordered a new insert switcher from Dutch Audio (@jeffrey_de_Gans) and I had the REAPER script updated to do this same thing for the Dutch Audio plugin that controls the insert switcher computer.

Hi @Justin_Perkins , nice to read you, it’s been a while.

do you think about an automatic clip automation that use the disconnect function of BM stuff when the cursor gets out of a given clip ?

@PG1 If it’s technically possible in WL13, that would do the trick I think. In the automation, we pick the function we want to turn on turn off.

Is there a disconnect function similar on geffrey’s switcher ?

sure the a wavelab equivalent of your reaper script would be the best, but in case, I suppose automating something like this trick might work.

Currently I do it manually all the time. But sometime I forget and loose time to figure out what I did.

And saving time and pain would be so great!

I have no idea. All I know is that I was somewhat surprised when in both REAPER and WaveLab, the Bettermaker plugin/hardware behavior didn’t work as I expected it to so I had somebody make a REAPER script so it works like it should have in the first place.

I think the reason that the REAPER script works is because REAPER allows plugins to be “Offline” which is one step better than DYN or bypass in WaveLab.

The plugin needs to fully disappear for it to work which REAPER can do but apparently WaveLab can’t.

That’s nice,

Most of the time I need to keep the locators in the projet, I would be happy to not have to open the exports and delete the locators clients or collègues don’t need.

It would be really nice to have the choose in the export function, if possible.

Why do you need to keep any marker for your client?
Because if you have this option off, then no marker is output at all.

Thanks, I use the option.

i keeps the track makers for vinyl masters to cut. And for k7

I export the master one per side, with makers for index, lead in, lead out.

But most of the time I’ve got other markers I need to clean.

Yellow I use for fade in fade out,

Green for loop and parts to be careful etc.

Cleaning masters markers take a bit of time.

When clients asks for a correction, re-clean :sponge: retake time etc,

It would save time to have the option in the export

  • “copy markers”
  • “copy selected markers ”

Do you think it’s realistic?

Another use case - there are 5 marker pairs, and 5 generic markers (that might have been used to take notes). If this option exists, users can render with marker pairs/generic markers. This will be useful primarily when user wants to continue working from the new file created (or in other words - avoid deleting unwanted markers from the new file).

Also, as we discuss markers,

The meta normalizer is a killer feature.

It would also save me time and be great a great option to have “loudness” markers automatically added to the loud sections the metanormalizer used as being the loudest on a clip.

You can use the visual analyser to see curves and hot spots.

Sure :+1: and it’s what I do sometimes.

For now, I listen to the full track most of the time and place the markers myself.

Nevertheless, in the context of cutting a dubplate for exemple, where it’s not money-wise possible to listen to all the tracks in full, it would save time.

Markers are visually simple to understand and do not require any “switching task” distracting cognitive effort. markers are not as cognitively complex as looking at the Visual Analyzer or the Rainbow Diagram, which are precise and powerful tools for sure, (or looking at the waveform, etc.)

But sometimes the need is simple and it’s just: “where are the louder parts?”.

If a box could be ticked to add those “loudness” markers from the Meta Normalizer in WL13, I would keep it ticked all the time and just watch the visual analyzer if needed. One shortcut in the metanorm would save 5 complex clicks to get what i needed.

On a 6 track vinyl

  • select all track, cmd+m with adding loud markers function = done :white_check_mark: 15 seconds max.
  • Or click on track, cmd+e then 5 clicks to achieve the visual analyser + adding markers * 6 tracks, at least 3 minutes.

I have in my to-do list a request, maybe it was from you, I don’t remember, to set markers at all hotpoint points.

A great !

Probably not me. But that’s great. If the function could also be linked to the metanorm it’s even greater .

Thanks a lot.
