Wondering if this thing from Adobe Audition is in Spectralayers Pro 12

It’s been six years since I had anything Adobe installed in my machine, but back in the day when I used Adobe Audition to digitize vinyl records, I remember a very simple and effective tool it had.

As some of you may know, vinyl records made during the second coming of it, are very thick and nice looking, but some of them are garbage when it comes to quality, the worst of which is evidenced in very loud pops. Some albums have a handful, some have lots of them.

These are very easy to spot on a waveform since they show as very thin spikes. So the way this tool in Audition worked was that you would zoom with the mouse wheel as much as you could into each of those spikes, select a range from its start to its end, press Ctrl+U and it would fix the pop. If it was too loud, perhaps it needed another Ctrl+U, and that spike would be at almost 0 dB.

Now, in both Spectralayers and Wavelab there are ways to achieve the same, but I was wondering if there is something as simple as what I described in Adobe Audition. My gut tells me that Spectralayers probably has more tools to fix audio problems, but either app is fine, as long as it’s that easy.

That would be $99 for something that I use every once in a while. There is only one record that is a complete disaster, Michael Giacchino’s “Star Trek Into Darkness”, which has over 20 very loud pops. But for the most part, they don’t have more than 4. Which is still a lot compared to old records which don’t have any, as long as they were properly cared for.

How would it take a long time to make a selection? I don’t understand.

There is a De-Click function in SpectraLayers, but – and this is probably not what you want to hear – I would instead use WaveLab, which can be used in such a “simple” way, or indeed, in as complex a manner as you choose:

… and yes, it usually sounds fine, as in, the repair is practically undetectable.

Oh if you mean to correct this incredibly small amount of clicks, SL can do this perfectly in a very similar manner to what you have described.

You just select the click using the transient selection tool (and the appropriate FFT size) and apply the Reconstruct module to the selection.

I understood your question to be theoretical, not that you were looking to do something specific right now.

I already own Acon DeClick, so that would work for me.

It would take a long time if you had a thousand clicks and pops to clean up via manual selection is what I meant.
