I use workspaces to make accomplishing various editing and mixing tasks easier— for example— for bringing up particular sets of plugins and channel settings windows. This, I would think, is the reason for workspaces. I don’t want choosing a workspace to move me from my position on the timeline, what tracks I am focused on and how tall they are, to some random place and zoom factor I happened to be in when I created the workspace. That makes it a pretty unusable feature for me.

At its most basic— I should be able to EXCLUDE the edit window from the saved window settings so that the edit window does not change when I switch to another workspace. An even more elegant solution would be if I could choose what was saved with my workspaces in a checkbox window, like the one in the lock clips feature— “EXCLUDE TRACK SIZE” “EXCLUDE ZOOM” etc.

As a post professional, this is future feature change #1 for me.
Thanks

+1x10n
where n is the amount by which this frustrates EVERY time.

Also workspaces should EXCLUDE

the zoom factors on the project window
the zone (left and right) positions of channels in the mix console (perhaps optionally)
in fact anything that is “content” of a window and not the "position of a window

Thx

Why, oh why do workspaces STILL change my visible position on the timeline? I hate this behavior so much. Why would I, or anyone want that? What windows are open and their position on the screen have nothing to do with my visible location on the timeline. Please change this bad behavior.

What I try to do is make sure that I am playing the sequence before I make the workspace change, so at least I jump back to where I was… but I still have to re-zoom and redo the track heights, etc. before I can carry on working. So frustrating!

Just started trying to incorporate workspaces so my zones are configured automatically when I enter and leave ARA editing.

To my surprise, I’ve found out that they also recall zoom and timeline position, which absolutely makes no sense to have as a default unchangeable behaviour.

Then I came here to ask about it and I’ve found this topic which is **thirteen years old**. You gotta be kidding me.

Could anyone at Steinberg explain to us even a single circumstance where this would be the desired behavior , or otherwise explain why this is still this way after so may years?

By the looks of it we will never be able to use workspaces.

There are quite a few requests along the lines of “What, that still doesn’t work?!?”, which really make you wonder… :-/ … some of them almost as old as the software itself.

Yeah, it’s definitely annoying! Such an old thread.

Here’s a tool (windows only) created by @Phil_Pendlebury that you can use to edit the settings file and stop this happening.

Only problem is that when you save the workspace again, i.e. making further adjustments, then the setting reverts and you have to use the tool again.

In case instructions are needed:

nb. I have added some features since making this video. So, in fact, if you already have workspaces created, there is no need to make new ones in Cubase. You can just run the tool (with Cubase closed) and select Duplicate Workspace. Then edit the persistence as explained in the video.

Agreed and while on this topic I also find it super annoying that we lose zoom focus when closing automation lanes (when there are alot of them) or expanding alot of folders etc. I always hope for some kind of zoom anchor feature that would allow us keep whats focused on screen instead of jumping around under certain circumstances like above also. Going to try Phils tool.

Cheers guys, to avoid cluttering up someone else’s thread, if there are any specific questions about the tool, if it is OK, please can you use the tool’s thread in the Lounge:
