Worrying "Unstable" message in dialogue box - can someone help?

Hi All,

Could anyone help me understand what’s going on and what I need to do?

I was about to render a small audio event which had only three plugins working on it (Cubase’s compressor, a pitch shifter called Graillon 2, and a delay plugin called Deelay), when an “Error” dialogue box appeared. It said that Cubase has become unstable (see first screenshot attached). Upon saving the project, I received another dialogue box (see second screenshot attached) saying that the project will be saved as a copy (i.e. with “-01” at the end of the file name) because of the programme being unstable.

After pressing OK and opening this newly saved project (with the “-01”) and seeing that it saved everything as it should, I tried again to render the audio event. I could render it, but if I wanted to edit any of the rendering settings, none of the buttons would respond and I could only close the Render in Place window. The “Use custom name” tick box under Filename settings can be ticked or unticked, but the computer won’t let me change the name while the box is ticked.

I also noticed that I keep getting the red light for Processing Overload (see third screenshot attached). Even after clicking on it to make it disappear, it comes back shortly after. So far it seems like it only happens after each time I open the Render in Place dialogue box, but now I can’t be sure if that has happened other times as well and that I’m only just noticing now?

And now, as I want to save and close the “-01” version of my original project, I receive another message saying that Cubase will save version “-02” for the same reason as before (see fourth screenshot). How do I resolve this so Cubase no longer needs to save separate versions of the file every time I press save?

I don’t know how to get in touch with Steinberg Technical Support from the UK as there is no clear information about that on their website.

If anyone can help me figure out what’s going on or if any of Steinberg’s forum admins could help, I’d be super grateful.

Thanks,
Anni

P.S. I wonder if this might have something to do with making a new project in 96kHz. I’d normally work at 48kHz for sound design but for a part of my project that I wanted to manipulate in more detail, I made a separate session set to this higher sample rate. I’ve briefly worked in Cubase sessions set to 96kHz before, but this is the first time this is happening to me.

You might try creating a brand new empty Project and then using Import Tracks From Project… to pull your previous work into it. If the original Project is corrupted this can sometimes help resolve it.

Does importing tracks get all the settings - plugins, sends, automation, etc. - from the original tracks?

It should. You can’t hurt anything by trying. If you don’t get the results you want just delete the new Project & its folder.

I may try… getting several “Unstable” messages of late…

Thanks.

I’ve fought with crashes on and off for years. What you describe, I have had happen several times recently. I just posted for help with the ‘Crash’ files attached. You should attach yours here.

First - As far as the ‘save as -01’ things… I’ve followed that direction and worked on the project under the new name for a while and then save it as the original name, if I don’t have any further issues. Don’t fret too much. Do what you need to do to get back to work.

Second - I’m not familiar with the non-Steinberg plugins you mentioned. Be careful with plugins from questionable sources (especially ‘Free’ ones). Not that they’re necessarily dangerous, but they could be a stability issue. I’ve settled on only a few well established ‘manufacturers’ and know, if I have an issue, they’ll be there to help. All the ‘off brand’ stuff I’ve eliminated from my system.

solid advice

Thanks @BobUpstairs and @raino - this morning I ended up importing the raw audio recordings from the folder they were in (outside of the cubase project) since i hadn’t done that much on them yesterday, and I realised that the project was in 24bit when it should have been in 32bit float (the setting the audio was recorded at), so I figured I’d abandon the stuff I was working on yesterday. No stability problems today; I haven’t used Deelay or needed to do any render-in-place.

That’s a fair point regarding free plugins. I’ll take that into consideration.
