Wrong version of Dorico opens

Nine times of ten the wrong (=lower) version of Dorico opens.
I’ve repeatidly tried to solve it with Activation Manager but it don’t help.

Make sure you’re not holding down any keys when it launches. Some of the meta keys are designed to launch Dorico as Elements or SE.

Otherwise, make sure that you don’t have any other licences for Elements or SE active.

Thank you —
interresting, it’s more often, not always, if I open through Keyboard Maestro (even if I don’t hold any keys). And more often if I open with clicking the saved file. And still to often when I just click the program-file.
Anyway I can live with it.

You shouldn’t have to live with it. It works normally for the vast majority.

We’ll see if anyone else has some ideas. If you’re using KM, you’re on a Mac?

Yes we’ll see…
(Yes Mac).

If you’re launching via a keyboard intermediary, could it be holding down a modifier key long enough to run into this problem? I doubt it will ever happen if you double-click the icon in a Finder window, or launch it from the Dock, or Spotlight, or Mission Control.

Hello,
thanks,
actually this isn’t a big problem, more just annoying, but the nerd in me is getting interested,
so - yes, it sometimes happens even then!

instead if just clicking your file - do a right-click (or ctrl-click).
This will bring up the Context-Menu where you will see a lot of options, one of it “Open with”. From there you will also see your Dorico installations, in case you have kept Dorico version 4.
Choose the application of your choice, and this should get you going.
Another tip: if you select one of your Dorico project files, don’t click on it but get it’s information Cmd+I.
Then select “Always open with” and point to the right Dorico version.

Ah: yes, I misread the problem as launching Elements or SE; but you say “Lower” version, e.g. Dorico 4.

TBH, if you have Dorico 5, I’d delete Dorico 4. There are a possible a couple of niche cases where you might want to check how something looks in an earlier version; but by and large, just having the latest one will be fine.

I have 3.5, 4 and 5 on my drive, and they all still run. But I rarely launch Dorico by double-clicking a project file! I launch it from the Dock, and once it’s running, files always open in the running version.

On the other hand, if you get the right version launching by file opening, it should stay the default unless you launch a different version.

(For the benefit of newer users; Ben knows this already) There was a change to the fundamental structure for how Lyrics were handled 4>5, and that’s why a few users keep 4 around “just in case”. That said, I have files going back to Dorico 1, and I’ve never had a problem opening older files. Sometimes it takes an adjustment of one or two things in engraving options, but otherwise, I’ve never needed the older versions. I haven’t even bothered to install D4 on my new computer because I never opened it.

All that to say, I second @benwiggy . Just ditch the old version and then it won’t even open anyway. There are so many improvements and bug fixes I cannot fathom why anyone would want to use it.

benwiggy – you understood me correctly although I expressed myself a little wrong, I meant opening in Elements…SE…
Well, now I always open without a keycode and then the error doesn’t happen as often.
Btw, came from Finale two weeks ago (so my first version is 5) and it’s a blessing to work in Dorico especially since I work a lot in Pro Tools and Logic which are much more related to Dorico than Finale.
