That is absolutely not the point ! Steinberg are supposed to be a professional software company, people make a living using their products, If you release something, be professional, make sure it works, quite simple really. There have been instances where updates have broken stuff, I had other, seemingly unrelated issues trying to install this, its not good enough. If you cant get your “freebie” to work, don’t bother releasing it

I got it working right away (on Windows 10). I did download the newest version of Halion as well. The system requirements on the web page notes it needs 7.1:

Try deleting everything from your Steinberg downloads folder (you can see where that is from the download manager)

In case it helps anyone. I finally found time to look into it and fix it.

So basically what is happening is the installer is not able to copy the vstsound file from the /Users/$username/Downloads/Steinberg/$productname/ to /Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Content/$productname/VST Sounds/

I can’t figure it out why because looking at the file and folder permissions, they seem to be owned by the same user and group as the old installed content in that location. So it could be a Mac OS update that did it or something else. Maybe the install doesn’t like the space in the folder “VST Sounds” or the path is too long?

Anyways, the quick fix for me is:

  • close all Steinberg programs.
  • open library manager, trash the X-Stream content. close Library manager.
  • launch Download manager, re-download the X-stream program.
  • after install, manually move the two files in /Users/$username/Downloads/Steinberg/X-Stream/ to /Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Content/Halion/VST Sounds/
  • re-launch Library manager and check they are there. If it says clean up duplicate content, just click the button to clean up, it should remove the copy in /Users/$username/Downloads/Steinberg/X-Stream/
  • launch Activation program and de-activate and re-activate.

Then it works properly in Haltion Sonic 7.
