Xml file open

I exported a file from another notation software where two half notes were tied together. After converting it to MusicXML and opening it in Dorico, it shows up as a whole note instead. How can I fix this so they display as two tied half notes?

This will involve Force Duration. Here’s one approach:

  1. Select the whole note, type 7 to change it to a half note
  2. Type O to force its duration
  3. Type R to repeat the note
  4. Left arrow, T to tie the two half notes

Here’s another:

  1. Enter Note Input and move to beat 3 of the bar
  2. Type U to split the whole note
  3. Leave Note Input and select the whole bar
  4. Type O to force duration, then T to tie

Thanks.

When importing an XML file, is it not possible to import it as-is? Does Dorico automatically set it to whole notes?

It depends on how you set Dorico’s option regarding xml import.

Most people will prefer to deactivate all options, so Dorico makes a clean layout “from scratch”, respecting the notation options the user has set in Dorico.
But of course you can keep options selected, and then ask later here if you come up with problems.

You can find the xml import options in Dorico’s general preferences.

I think if you have this option checked in Preferences > MusicXML > Import, it will import as-is – but every note will now have Force Duration enabled, which may have other undesirable consequences.

Thanks.

If I follow the instructions you provided, it will output as half notes, but since this could cause problems during further processing, it would be better to work on them individually.
