is it possible to have ties sit behind leger lines, like this?
If not, that’s a feature request, to have the option to do so.

When you say “sit behind” do you mean “disappear” as in the example?
Incidentally, am I correct that these very idiosyncratic (and fascinating) examples are from hand-written autograph scores rather than Lilypond or another notation program?
Correct and correct.
Z order control for most objects will be huuuuuge if it ever gets implemented. There are lots of things that would benefit from such controls.
Even so, I don’t imagine they will ever enable leger lines to white-out a margin around them the way we can with text. One would have to stack white rectangles between the tie and the leger lines.
Just to play Devil’s Advocaat: if you wouldn’t blank out staff lines behind a tie, then ledger lines, as ‘extensions’ of the staff lines, would be treated in the same way?
