2 ?s on Ableton Live vs. Cubase workflow

Switched from Cubase SX3 to Live and recently switched fully to Cubase 13 a few months ago. I have 0 regrets, but there are 2 things I miss…

  1. In Live, there is an option that allows you to move all the active files in a current Live Set (Cubase nomenclature is Project) to a new folder/location and then ‘Collect All and Save’. This places a copy of all the audio files (used in the current Set revision) to the new folder and makes the project self contained… even if the files are all over multiple directories and/or hard drives. I want to do this with Cubase… but not just move the Cubase folder with ALL the files and all the revisions I’ve saved along the way. I specifically want to move the final version of the Project and just the associated files currently in use to a new (self contained) folder. For example, I don’t need the 9 bass lines and 14 vocal takes that I decided not to use between revision 1.0 and revision 7.3 of my Project
How is this done in Cubase?

  2. In Live, using a control surface transport (in my case SSL UF1) and pressing Stop stops the audio in place. Pressing Stop again moves the playhead back to the last selected location… and, if I remember correctly, pressing a 3rd time moves the playhead to 0:00:00 on the time line. In Cubase, I typically have to press the comma on my keyboard to move to the start position at 0:00:00. Is there something I’m overlooking here that can take the computer keyboard out of the steps so I can use my control surface without having to include pressing comma? It’s an awkward workflow IMO. Ideally, I’d like the 3 stops I described above… but Stop once stops in current position and Stop twice moves playhead to 0:00:00 or 1.1.1.1 would be fine.
    Can this be done?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this

  1. Explore (the not so intuitively named function) File > Backup Project.
  2. I don’t believe that is possible. Perhaps can be realized if you’re willing to write a MIDI Remote script for this function. Stop and RTZ have always been two separate commands in Cubase. Perhaps adding “Go to Project Start” to Shift+Stop on your UF1 would be a decent compromise?

Thanks!

Maybe I’ll try mapping RTZ to a different key. Comma is too… in between stuff. Maybe I can flip numberpad 0 and comma shortcuts around. That would be faster and less prone to missing/mistakes. NP 0 is a nice big key and makes more sense in this context

For backing up, I go to Pool, remove unused media and prepare for archive. Then, I will go backup project in the file menu. For detail you could follow Dom’s video on this topic:

Thanks. Good stuff. I realized as I was watching that I had seen the video before… but I had Covid and probably had to change my drool bucket while I watched it :joy:

Anyway. Most appreciated, both of you. I got ‘Go to project start’ mapped to the number pad 0 key and (now that I’m looking at what I’m doing as a backup) I see where I can get the Project whittled down to only what’s necessary to preserve it (and reclaim disk space). That’s what I was after :pray:t3:
